IT'S never easy fighting back when you have a black mark next to your
name but Manly forward Anthony Watmough has resurrected a
representative career many feared was on the rocks. The
tough-as-teak backrower was Manly's leading metre man (144.7m) in the
club's NRL premiership-winning season as he continued his redemption

PREMIERSHIP-winning Manly coach Des Hasler last night predicted new recruit Tony Williams could fill the sizeable vacancy left by the club's departing champion, Steve Menzies.

Hasler said Williams, a winger at Parramatta, could also play centre, back-rower or come off the bench next year - similar to Menzies.

Williams walked out on the Eels and could now become a sensation at Brookvale.

"He has versatility. That will benefit the side."

Manly CEO Grant Mayer admitted the club’s partnership with the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles “may be over before one sod is turned” if the facility is not given the official green light within two years.

The NRL grand finalists entered an agreement with the Coast club late last year.

As part of the deal, the Coast’s Queensland Cup outfit, which set to debut in the competition next year, will act as Manly’s feeder club.

However, Mr Mayer revealed the partnership would be placed in jeopardy if the stadium’s construction continued to remain on the backburner.

THE NRL has branded two feet-first tackles by Melbourne fullback Billy Slater in the Grand Final as dangerous and warned he risks suspension if he continues. NRL referees director Robert Finch warned Slater he needed to be "careful".

"If he should kick the ball out of a player's hands or make contact with a player's head the repercussions could be grave," Finch said.

"It could be a penalty try, an eight-point try, someone could be hurt or a player could be sent off."

Slater incensed many spectators in last Sunday's Grand Final by sliding feet-first at two Manly players trying to ground the ball for tries.
