The Sea Eagles and the manager of Michael Monaghan were forced to deny speculation last night that the Manly captain was about to be released from his three-year contract to join South Sydney. According to the rumour mill, Manly was looking to off-load Monaghan after signing Melbourne halfback Matt Orford, but executive director Paul Cummings strenuously denied it last night. "We did not approach South Sydney about Michael Monaghan, end of subject," Cummings said. However Manly chief executive Pat Wilson confirmed Souths' boss Shane Richardson had made an approach for Monaghan last week - before being told a flat no. "Of course they are (interested) ... but we've had no further discussions on the matter," Wilson said last night. www.foxsports.com.au
