THE first part of a young footballer’s body the good judges look at are the legs and backside. On both counts back in 2006, when Michael Robertson debuted for the Sea Eagles, he failed miserably on the sight test. His legs wouldn’t have been out of place on an anorexic chicken while his backside was non-existent. But the likeable lad from Canberra has proved himself to be the real ironman of the NRL premiership. Since making his debut against the Cowboys in round two in 2006, Robbo hasn’t missed a minute of the action in 104 consecutive games - a mammoth 8480 minutes. He has scored 46 tries and proved himself to be one of the best clubmen ever to wear the maroon and white. In the meantime the chicken legs have filled out considerably and there is even a hint of a butt. The transformation of Michael Robertson, three-try grand final hero, has been amazing. When he first arrived at the Sea Eagles he had little to say and was simply a hard worker who made the best of his ability. In 2010 he is a respected senior member of the club and a go-to man for the younger and not so young players. Robbo is never near any controversy yet is a real larrikin with the playing group. He is looking forward to a season in his specialist left wing position but will be the first to put his hand up to help out the team if another position in the backline needs filling through injury. Coach Des Hasler has shown time and time again that he has complete faith in Robertson doing the job in a crisis - 2010 won’t be any different.
