NARRAWEENA Hawks mentor Cliff Lyons is a contender to coach a Manly-Warringah team in the NSW Cup next year.
The Sunshine Coast Eagles are Manly’s NRL feeder club playing in the Super Cup in Queensland. That successful arrangement is up for negotiation at the end of the season. But regardless of the outcome of those discussions, Manly may now have a team to play in the local NSW Cup with Lyons as a leading contender to coach. “It’s something I would seriously think about,” he said on the eve of Sunday’s Manly-Warringah A-Grade grand final against Valley United at Brookvale Oval. “But I haven’t sat down with anyone to talk about.” Manly-Warringah League and Football Club chairman Bob Reilly said Lyons would make the ideal first-up coach for the team. “I’d like to see Cliffy as coach,” Reilly said yesterday. “Cliffy has done a great job as a first-year coach with Narraweena. “He’s got a side through to the grand final and is obviously a club (Sea Eagles) stalwart.” This season has been Lyon’s first as a head coach. The ex-NSW and Australia five-eighth said while it’s been a stressful season, he has enjoyed it. “It’s been a bit stressful, early on in the season,” he said. “Now we’ve found our feet it’s not too bad.” Lyons said his Hawks’ squad is ready to upset Valley in Sunday’s decider. “Favourites have always been known to get beat, we are hoping to continue to do that,” he said. Kick-off on Sunday is 3pm. The game will be broadcast live on Radio Northern Beaches (90.3FM and 88.9FM) from 2.45pm.
