WHILE the salary cap will ensure Steve Menzies is not afforded a swansong at the Sea Eagles next year, there are plenty within the club and outside who would love to see him back.

“Beaver” still has many fans in the NRL, not just within the Sea Eagles, and it would certainly be a marketeer’s dream to see the great man return.

“Oh please bring him back,” Sea Eagle Girl wrote on our website.

“He represents everything that is good about the game and our team.

“A bigger case needs to be made to the NRL that one-team players of his ilk, along with the Lockyers, Hindmarshes and Gidleys, need to be accommodated differently under the salary cap. Loyalty needs to count for something in this world.”

Door slammed
AN unsuccessful attempt was made this week to free Jason Ferris from jail to play in Sunday’s A-Grade grand final at Brookvale Oval.

We understand Valley United officials were working over-time to somehow get Ferris 80 minutes of freedom to play the Hawks in the decider.

Ferris was convicted and sentenced to 13 months in jail for obtaining money by deception earlier this year. The earliest he can get out is January 6.

“We were trying to get him out for the weekend but have had no success,” a Valley connection said.

Arko honoured
SEA Eagles supremo Ken Arthurson will be inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame later this year.

The gong will be presented to Arko at a special ceremony in Melbourne in October.

The former Manly boss will attend with his wife Barbara.  It follows his induction into the International Rugby League Hall of Fame last year.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed, it’s a great honour,” Arko said.

His induction is recognition for 60 years of service to rugby league.

Lowey’s choice
WE wonder if baked beans will be on the menu at breakfast on Saturday morning in Dee Why when Grahame Lowe meets with Cliffy Lyons at Sea La Vie restaurant for a pep talk ahead of Sunday’s A-Grade decider?

Lowey is a big fan of the canned food, often preferring it for breakfast or lunch down at the Sea Eagles’ bunker in Narrabeen.

“It’s very filling,” he said.

Lyons has plenty of respect for Lowe, who coached the former Manly five-eighth during his days at the club in the early 1990s.
