A question for someone who knows the rules

When manly received a penalty & decided to take the kick for goal i noticed all the warriors players in a huddle beside the posts(similar to when a conversion is being taken).
what is to stop the kicker chipping/hooking the ball to the opposite side of the field from where the warriors are for a manly player to catch it then score a try untouched?
we have all seen poor attempts at goal before so is there a rule to stop it occuring?

Believe it needs to be a genuine attempt at goal so a chip kick would probably be called back but would be worth a shot in my book

Once you have indicated your intention to kick for goal to the referee, you must do so , or make an attempt to do so, feigning to kick for goal will incur a penalty against you

I don’t doubt you are correct, but which rule in the rule book says that.

Correct, but nothing stopping a goal kicker from taking acting lessons, pretend to shank it or slip over and kick it poorly to suit the team

This is 100% correct. The dirty rotten eels use to exploit this rule in the early eighties by taking an across field shot at goal at such an acute angle, it also served as a cross field bomb. This was also at a time of Cronin place kicking for touch, the wall, and any other crap that Gibson could come up with as being ingenious.

on a side note, a mates team when awarded a penalty near the posts occasionally used to point to the posts and quietly tell the ref they were taking the tap then place the ball on the ground. if the opposition weren't alert there would be a quick tap followed by an attempt to score:giggle:. it worked a bit too!

Ridgey place kicked for touch also and manly were the first rorters of the head bin or similar when paul shaw was used as a super sub often

Excellent comment jbb/james, although your anti Manly vibe suggests you have no part being on this site. Yes, i was there at the glorious 1987 victory, when the all-wise Bozo used the Cleal / Shaw substitution thing to maximum advantage. Yes indeed it was a beautiful rort that led to one of my best nights on the drink ever. This thread however was dealing with the rule concerning shots at goal, so how you brought the concept of head bin and the like has me wondering.

We once exploited the blood bin rule with a sachet of tomato sauce for a free replacement lol... got away with it too!

When Parramatta took these penalty kicks, they weren't as a shot for goal.
