ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Australian Crime Commission chief John Lawler says codes can notify clubs indentified in the doping investigation. (News Online Brisbane)

The Australian Crime Commission has given the AFL and NRL permission to inform clubs identified by the commission's investigation into doping in sport.

The chief executive of the Australian Crime Commission, John Lawler, released a statement on Monday confirming that he had granted permission for both leagues to notify clubs which were referred to in the report.

"Following a request from the Australian Football League and National Rugby League, I have granted permission for both codes to confidentially notify the specific clubs within their respective codes that were identified in Project Aperio," the statement said.

"Once notified, a club may choose to make it publicly known that they have been notified."

Mr Lawler also confirmed that the ACC cannot name clubs and individuals as they were protected under a section of the Australian Crime Commission Act which protects the rights of people against damage to their reputations and the right to a fair trial.

It has already been made public that Essendon is being investigated by the AFL and Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA) to determine whether several Bombers players took performance-enhancing drugs, possibly without knowledge they were doing so.

Earlier, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou confirmed the league had been told by the ACC the identity of another club which had one player suspected of using a performance-enhancing substance.

Demetriou said the AFL wanted to be able to tell the club.

He added that he had not been told the identity of the player.

Demetriou urged fans to keep faith in their teams and continue to support them ahead of the start of the preseaon cup this weekend.

"This is not a widespread problem in our code," he said.

"Have faith in the game and come along and watch your football team play.

"Because the AFL has been at the forefront of (fighting) performance-enhancing drugs, and if there is one player out there being investigated by ASADA, then that investigation will take place."

Demetriou acknowledged the possibility that a player or players who were being investigated could be playing in the opening round of the preseason cup competition this weekend.

"If a player (under normal circumstances) had tested positive, ASADA would be conducting their investigation in private," he said.

"That player would be dealt with under the WADA code.

"The only difference here is that this is being done in public."

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Sad day for sport. I pray the majority of people involved were unaware.

And in other breaking news, The Federal Government has held a press conference to announce they have evidence of underworld activity in Sydney's south-western suburbs and have asked all guilty parties to come forward.

Hilarious mate.

Now's not the time though.

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Why is everyone so convinced the NRL six are all performance enhancing drugs? The AFL has seven mentioned that are illicit drugs and there is no pressure to name them.

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Andrew dimitriov launched the nab cup this morning at a press conference. To say there is no pressure to name those involved wrong. The media want blood ASAP

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

And supporters want the clubs and players named as well

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

All clubs involved have been notified.

Thus far, Souths, Parramatta and Canterbury say they have heard nothing from ARLC. 3 down, 12 to go (Think Warriors are safe).

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Parra are hoping like hell that the 6 clubs named are suspended for the year so that they might just have an outside chance of finally making the eight.

Seriously has Manly come out and said that they haven't been notiified? If they haven't I would have thought that they would have jumped at the chance to say so.

@NRL "The information that has been passed on to the clubs is simply that they have been referred to within the report."

@brentread_7 can add Raiders to that list.

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

If Storm have any more than say a rogue user and there is a suggestion of team doping they must be kicked for good.No ifs,no buts-gone.

Still remember seeing a picture of the coach at Bombers training last year with Hird and co on a fact finding mission.

10 clubs have now said no phone call from NRL. Penrith confirmed, Cowboys and Roosters yet to respond. Deloittes visited 3 others

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

Looks like Manly's one of them.

Ahh well, all it says is they're mentioned in the report.

RE: ACC gives codes permission to notify clubs

They will be mentioned - Dank seems to be the link, the nature of the mention will be the point of concern
