On Tuesday 23rd October, the Australian Universities Rugby League team kicked off their 2018 South Africa tour with a strong victory over West Province Invitational XIII, at Helderberg Rugby Stadium, Cape Town.

The team featured Intrust Super Cup players Dalton Phillips (Norths Devils), Jayden Baker (Tweed Heads Seagulls), and Chris Ostwald (Easts Tigers).

The team also featured a strong Queensland contingent, after Queensland Universities dominant 52-12 victory over NSW Universities, back in June. Australia opened the scoring with a try early on in the game. West Province fought back to even the scores with a try of their own.

From this point onwards, Australia dominated the remainder of the first half, running in 7 tries to give themselves a 42-6 lead at the break.

The second half saw Australia run away with the game, scoring a further 6 tries to register a convincing 76-6 victory over West Province Invitational XIII.

I have always thought that there was a really good opportunity and good scope to better develop Rugby League in South Africa and taking into account that they actually used to participate at an international R L level in the 50 "s and 60 "s apparently . Balmain Tigers and Panthers lured some reasonable players from South Africa in the late 60 "s and into the 70 "s, to play in the then Sydney comp so one would assume that even with a lower profile in recent decades that there would still be a good opportunity to again raise the profile of R L there at present and future times . Certainly would not be any lack of or have a dearth of sporting talent there to encourage into a game like R L .

HEy @mozgrame .... I know fake news when I see it .... are you seriously suggesting there are 17 Rugby League players smart enough to go to University .... hahahahaha ..... they must all be wingers ......

@KOMORI ..... Can't imagine they would have any Front rowers mate ....
