Bani's life at risk had he flown with Eagles

MANLY medical staff have averted a potential disaster involving winger Michael Bani by banning him from flying to Brisbane.

Bani tore ankle ligaments and wasn't available for the Sea Eagles' clash with the Broncos today but was still planning to make the trip to catch up with his family.

Before clearing him to fly, Manly doctor Paul Bloomfield performed a routine check - which may have ultimately saved his life. An ultrasound revealed an 8-10 centimetre clot in Bani's calf and, had the condition remained undetected and Bani caught the flight, there was a risk of his suffering the potentially fatal deep vein thrombosis.

"I'm doing not too bad, I feel OK," Bani said yesterday. "The news on my leg is OK. I have to see the vascular specialist this week and we'll see how I go."

Bani requires twice daily blood-thinning injections to his stomach of clexane, which are administered by housemate Noel Cleal - the club's recruitment guru. If that's not successful, he'll be put on warfarin and be sidelined for up to six months.

"We're hoping the treatment he's currently on will reduce the clot and he could be back in four or five weeks," Manly media man Peter Peters said.

But there is some positive news for Bani, with the Sea Eagles and his manager close to agreeing on a three-year extension at Manly.

"We're expecting to announce something later this week," CEO Grant Mayer said.

A 10 cm clot is huge and life threatening. He is lucky it was spotted. From a Manly point-of-view he is a big loss for at least 5 weeks and potentially the season.

Gee that's a blow, we'll miss him. Makes Williams' performance this afternoon all that more crucial. Let's see if he has what it takes to hold down the vacant spot over the next 5 or 6 weeks, it's a big opportunity for him.

Williams went OK today.  Bani was doing very well and it's good to read that the club is supportive.

Williams looked like a first timer, but I was pretty impressed. He also seemed to be getting better as the game went on.

Out of position in defence a couple of times but solid enough debut i suppose

Parramatta junior I'm pretty sure. He's good mates with a mate of mine who went to school in Parra, so I presume he knows him from there.

Hills District junior. All things going well he'll be going up against his brother, John, next weekend when we take on the Cowboys.

Interesting that warfarin will put him out for the rest of the year.  I guess because he will just bleed too much if he gets a cut.

Williams let in the first try yesterday only because he slipped.  It was right in front of me - he looked very nervous and I'm sure will improve now that first game is out of the way.
