Ben Kennedy factor long gone

Its a simple game-
Compete hard and you give yourself a shot and earn the respect of players , fans and most importantly as individuals- belief
The tough winning Attitude of BK, stayed with Manly a decade after he hung up his boots, but sadly these players do not get it.
The determination and desire is obviously shot, relying on individuals to spark something rather than rolling up the sleeves themselves.
The lack of inspiration is bewildering
Not only are the players lacking energy, none step up to the plate and rev up the rest, if Terry Randall , BK, Ronny Gibbs was on the field in recent times, these players would be copping a much deserved rocket
Forget the poor kicking game, lack of attacking structures, soft middle defence....it all starts with desire and will to win which is simply not there.

I think Joel Thompson has shown some of that Manly spirit, and also the Trobjs of course, and Marty sometimes.

But way too often you see hands on hips from players who are beaten in the run, or not directly in the play. They do their job, but not much more -and that's why they are a bottom half of the table team!

Finally someone nails it properly , well said @maxta

All the other threads wanting to sack this person and sack that person fail to acknowledge that the buck stops with the players who frankly “ don’t seem to give a ****” at times.

At times they do, and when that happens we win through desire BUT it’s rare most of the the time it’s DILLIGAF out there!!

Can certainly agree with this. As mentioned Thompson rips in every week (vocally blasting players last night, telling them to get back into the defensive line etc), but there were plenty that didn't look interested.

Thompson is Manly's most improved all round over the past 4-5 weeks, along with Kelly who is more your flair player, who often rolls up the sleeves more than the big boys in the middle.
When your most enthusiastic play of the night comes from your winger who go's all in and has to be replaced, yet the players around don't lift - I don't get it.
Big shots are an expression of intent and its usually a lift to the team, the fans seemed to raise from the shot more than the players, which is a reflection of this performance

At this high skill level often the difference is the ability of the coach to INSPIRE his players. 10 percent down on effort and you lose to everyone.Thats what coaches do!

I am so sick of tired hearing the players love to play for Barrett , he’s a great bloke.

Fact: they DONT play for him because they get beaten by bottom eight sides week after week.

How the hell can anyone say they are playing for the f....ing coach when we turn up like zombies. It is mind boggling that this is raised as a positive re Trent.

If they are playing for him I’d hate see it if they weren’t. What they are doing is playing him out of a job and he is helpless to change it. Good coaches inspire. There is no way a side with talent like ours should be playing like this.

That "s sad , as really for the players to Turn Up at this level and in front of a home crowd really should result in to actually Turn Up .

If they are paying for him I’d hate see it if they weren’t. What they are doing is playing him out of a job and he is helpless to change it. Good coaches inspire. There is no way a side with talent like ours should be playing like this.

Not on the replace Barrett train at the moment, but must confess to being on the platform with a ticket.
I had to laugh at this post as it resembles a lot of truths and there is a bit behind it.
Firstly will say players have to wear plenty of responsability at getting themselves up at NRL level, but there is also something not right behind the scenes when this poor.
I always remember when even as kids, young players loved that coach who took it easy at training and was more a friend than a mentor, then got whooped come game day - is this the case ??
I do dislike the press conference about all these players having a dig and just the bounce of the ball not going our way stuff, my 12 year old daughter was asking why Manly are not trying - lets not keep the same excuses each week, with no accountability the standards will stay South, along with the results.

Been saying it for a couple of years. Since Killer left there is no leadership on the field. Sure we have Captain/s but I'm talking true leaders who inspire and get the best out of the team. Tell me who our "go to" player is these days ? when the chips are down and we need a clutch play - who steps up ?? DCE isn't a leader - sure he's articulate and polite and tries his hardest, but that doesn't win you games - as we have seen over the last two seasons.

I don't see a leader in our squad, we've got some young passionate players who might develop into that role given time, but at the moment it's a black hole. Just a whole heap of individuals trying their best and hoping that the tea leaves align so they click on game day.

But why does it happen that way? BK brought strong leadership, along with Hasler, both inspiring leaders who had been there won the premiership, they had an extremely high standard of what they expected from themselves....and the rest of the team. Cherry isn't a strong leader sorry but he's too much of a nice guy, Barrett never won the comp as a player, let alone a coach and seems to still want to be one of the boys.

I know it's not footy but look at the aussie cricket team under weak leadership, Steve Smith apparently saw Warner and Bancroft planning their stupid ball tampering bollocks and waled on doing a Sgt Schultz saying 'I know nothing' and look at where that got them. Do you think Steve Waugh would've acted like that? He would've smacked that sandpaper out of their hands and told them to pull their heads in.

Same for the Wobblies when John Eales was the captin, if the team was under pressure he would take the ball, or make a kick or do something to pull the entire team up.

Don't underestimate the positive effect of strong leadership, I think Jake should be made captain for starters, I know he loses it from time to time but at least he has passion and his defence should inspire others. As far as the coaches go we have Barrett for at least a year, but dump Cartright and bring in an assistant that has Manly passion and strong leadership. Maybe BK if he's at all interested, I dunno but we need someone.

I thought you meant forwards that ran hard or just ran at all.

Last night Thommo and Lane to a lesser extent ran hard. AFB walked into the line, Marty hit a trot. Far too many times Api, DCE and Hodko couldn't even find 1 runner let alone had options that would possibly make the defence have to think.
