NEWCASTLE has suffered a massive blow on the eve of tonight?s showdown with Manly in Gosford with skipper Kurt Gidley out of the big match through injury.

The inspirational fullback has not recovered from the rib cartilage injury he carried into Origin III and is not prepared to gamble with pain-killing injections.

Gidley is hopeful a further week's rest will see the injury settle down.

Shannon McDonnell will come in for Gidley at fullback.
