Delmege says name your price

By James Hooper | February 22, 2009

MAX Delmege has accused co-owner Scott Penn of trying to sell out Manly fans by moving the premiers to the Central Coast.

Delmege has made a "name-your-price'' offer to buy out Penn's 42.5 per cent share of the club. He also said the head of high-profile media manager Peter Peters must roll at the next board meeting on March 6.

Delmege holds the numbers 5-2 at board level. His son Brett Delmege, Michael Smith, Kerry Sibraa, Peter Bryant and Phillip Dean form the Delmege faction.

Co-owners Scott and Rick Penn are the rivals.

"We didn't start this, but we'll certainly be looking to finish it. If you're going to fire some cheap shots at someone you're going to have to expect retaliation,'' Delmege said.

"Our chairman started this by hijacking a press conference to announce our new major sponsor.

Then, because of family relations between the media manager and the chairman, they've attacked me.

"I don't see why I should have to pay somebody's wages when he's biting the hand that feeds him. If you've got somebody working for you as a media manager, surely his role is to try to introduce positive media about Manly. Not negative media about one of the owners.''

The next board meeting is scheduled for March 6, after the premiers return from the World Club Challenge in England.

Delmege suggested the play for control of the club was designed to ultimately move Manly to Gosford, where the NRL continues to dangle an $8million carrot.

"I've heard that there has been some talk within our ogranisation that certain parties were looking at the idea of moving to the Central Coast,'' Delmege said.

"The reason behind that, I believe, is the significant amount of money on offer from the NRL.

"I believe that they've registered the name the Central Coast Eagles without the permission of the board.

"If that's the case, there's a fairly clear assertion that they're looking at the Central Coast. Not on my watch. Not us, we're Manly through and through.

"For us, it's about the supporters - not commercialism.

"You don't buy a share of a rugby league club thinking you're going to make money.''

He has not one iota of proof apart from the registration of a domain name, which could all be about a feeder side, couldn't it.

i ve come to the conclusion that Max thinks us fans are dumb ****s

NO ONE CAN MOVE MANLY WITHOUT THE FOOTBALL CLUBS APPROVAL
THE HOLD CONTROL OF THAT.

Im not sure if Dean and Sibraa will vote to punt zorba. if they do they are very stupid, Arko might not have any control over Delmege and Penn but he still has some pull amongst football club members. If zorba gets punted im tipping Dean. Sibraa and their mate Reilly will be all gone at the next football club elections.

It is now clear that this has become personal for Max. He is now using his clout and it sounds like it is a vendetta!!  That is all bull and he knows it.

if i was scott i would turn around and say something obsence like 30 million

lets see wat max is made of.

Yeah, call his bluff.  He did say "name your price" so let's see how big his dick is (assuming he has one).

Penn and Mayer was going on FIRST about a $200,000 dept, during a sponsor press conference. Was that acceptable?

Surely they must have known Delmege was up for a fight.

I hope that Max does buy out Penn's share and Zorba should get the bullet.  If he was working for an organization and came out in a factional dispute to support one faction of the Board then he should be punted.  He's an employee for ****s sake.  It's just inappropriate and totally unprofessional.  And I don't see the problem with asking for KPIs.  I happen to see them as a wank, but others (read Mata) think they're worth something.  Max saved our asses when all looked lost, and I happen to respect loyalty.

What organisation in there right mind get rid of the CEO, puts KPI's on the coach and sack there media manager when they have made the last 2 grand finals, winning one, announcing a new major sponsor and turning a profit?? All I can say it must have been easy to make money in property market over the last 10 years. Also Zorba on 2KY stated that he was linked by marriage to Scott Penn and the coments made were in relation to an interview with Max on his radio show. On 2 KY he does not act as the Media Manager of Manly.

C'mon, who doesn't see Zorba other than wearing a Manly cap.  He should stick to 2KY and give up his day job.  If he wants to bag Max then fine, he can do it without putting his hand out for wages from the club.  The CEO is not resigning at the end of season 09 is my read of Mayer's decision, and good luck to him if that's what he wants to do.  Unlike many others on this blog I don't see the sky falling in with these departures and with Hasler signed until the end of 2011 all's good.  Like Max, I too am suspicious of carpetbaggers.

Actually, if you knew your history you would know Penn was in the frame to "save" the club a long time before Delmege was.  Delmege just came in with a higher offer.

But Penn is no johnny-come-lately.

The Penn's could have trumped Max's 'higher offer' with an even higher one.  But no, they didn't.  Did they consider Manly worth more than Max did at the time?  Obviously not, even with a relative on the inside.  Zorba should go, the Penn's and Max can fight it out in the boardroom and we can get on with winning in 09.  If the Penns win and we ever move to the CC, then I for one will give the game away and go support the Canucks.

Just because someone saved the club in the past does not mean they are the best thing for the club in the present. Max's involvement in the Monaghan saga was poison and being a good operator in the shady field of commercial property is a long way from knowing anything about running a football club.

I can't believe that intelligent people give the Central Coast discussion any credence.

Taking Manly to the Central Coast as a "good business move" is tantamount to Coca Cola deciding to sell aniseed arsenic in their bottles to drum up additional business.

Mayer has just bought in millions of dollars of sponsorship making us the best sponsored club in the entirety of Sydney, and we have the lowest overheads of any club at our Stadium, with a break-even crowd being less than 6,000.

We are probably the strongest side in Sydney for dollars, demographics and exposure, why would we of all Sydney clubs go there when we've already tried it and failed?

Plus, as my protagonist Cliffy GC continually points out - the football club has the casting vote on this issue and will never allow it.

Methinks DSM5 and to a lesser extent Byso are just enjoying stirring people up.

Just remember it was Max who on two radio programs stated publicly that he supported Grant Mayer and then stabbed him in the back at board level. I too like Zorba think real men say what they believe and they should have the conviction to back there comments up with honorable actions. I believe this has not been done in this case.

As for Max having that creature Benny bagging out Zorba in public and stating that the Penn’s what to secretly move the club to Gosford, how low can you go. What proof do they have or are they just expecting the Penn’s to act like themselves and state something publicly and do the opposite?

The one thing I believe more than anything i is that Zorba has maroon and white flowing through his veins, has the conviction to say it as he sees it even when it is unpopular and is always truthful.

I can not stop thinking that this has been staged as a show down for control of the club

I would prefer to Delmege gone from the board and if he is bought out that would be fine too, who is to say if Max kicked the bucket that his family would keep up his involvement anyway, he will allways be remembered for saving manly, build a statue name a grandstand after him

Not to mention that he stared down the barrel of the cameras and said he did "not owe Manly one cent" before writing out a cheque for more than $200,000 in arrears.

A bald-faced lie on national television - what else is he lying about?

Look I don't know what actually happened at the board level. I don't know what exactly has gone on between the parties.

I do know that all the parties have done what they have believing it in the best interest of the club. I also can see a lot of chopping and changing and contradictions in comments by some. I also think peters  may be best moving on for more reasons than this.

Personally I would like to see the entire old boys faction cleared out and some better business heads in place but at the same time I am not worried about what is going on and think we are all blowing it out of proportion and making it worse. The news agencies are salivating with all this easy print and I will be happy to watch it all play out, and keep my involvement to a minimum in this saga despite any info I am getting from both sides, it all smacks of the high school click wars with misinformation coming from everywhere
