DES Hasler has surged into contention for the NSW State of Origin coaching job - and Manly chief executive Grant Mayer is adamant the Sea Eagles mentor should be appointed ahead of Craig Bellamy if the Storm lose tonight's grand final.

Mayer believes Hasler was robbed blind when Bellamy won the coach of the year award at the Dally Ms. Setting the scene for a winner-takes-all coaching shootout tonight, NSWRL general manager Geoff Carr confirmed Hasler's name had already been raised at board level as a possible replacement for Graham Murray.

Bellamy needs to deliver a premiership with the Storm to prove he deserves to be given the Blues' reins come Origin time.

"There have been discussions at board level already, and Des Hasler has been discussed," Carr told The Sun-Herald.

"Craig Bellamy and Tim Sheens have gone along the traditional route of coaching City Origin and Country Origin and both have done a fantastic job there. But Des Hasler would be the other one to consider.

"You cannot do any more than he's done. The reason we wait for the premiership to finish before naming our coach is to guarantee we get the best coach. An announcement will be made within a fortnight."

Grant Meyer can get back in his box over this one. Hasler did not have the game plan to worry the Storm and the better coached team won.. Kicking to Slater was not the right plan. Playing like there was next week was not the best plan. Perhaps Grant's comments fired up Bellamy, if they did, thanks Grant.
