Des Hasler retiring

No better candidate, even Craig Bellamy couldn't help the Blues.
The Origin Coach doesn’t need to coach as such ( they are all elite players ) just needs to be a motivator.

The assistant coach can do all the hard work.

Maybe , Lazarus , jeez even Gallen but Laurie has done his dash in my opinion.

Yep , this is code for “ I know they’ll sack me so I’ll announce my retirement first “.

And one thing about Ha$ler , it’s ALL about money , he loves it and lots of it so yeah , PNG come on down
Good luck living in a razor wired compound, but then again Des has an easy going nature outside of press conferences.

NRL: Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler and captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui fronted the media after their sides' loss to the Cowboys.
Des Hasler is a dead-man walking as he confronts a player revolt that will represent the final straw in his tenure as Titans coach.
This masthead can reveal besieged Titans coach Hasler has lost the dressing room ahead of Sunday’s derby clash against the Broncos at Cbus Super Stadium.

It can also be revealed Titans hierarchy will have the contractual power to sack Hasler if the Gold Coast lose to the Broncos this weekend.

Gold Coast bosses are aware of the player disharmony.

Several Titans top-liners have raised a number of issues with club management in recent weeks, including Hasler’s inability to connect with the playing group and relentless training methods.

A number of players claim to be “confused” by Hasler’s messaging, including a lack of clarity over team selections and constant eleventh-hour alterations to the Titans’ game-day team.

In the ultimate farce, one Titans star only discovered he was making his NRL debut after logging onto a News Corp website to check the weekly team lists, underlining the poor communication between Hasler and Gold Coast players.

Gold Coast’s superstar recruit David Fifita has struggled to settle under Hasler and has consistently delayed his return from an ankle injury despite Titans physios giving him the green light to play.

Hasler was hired by the Titans to bring a harder edge following the shock sacking of Justin Holbrook, but on the eve of the Broncos clash, the Gold Coast are last on percentages with a shocking -144 differential.

Titans players have spoken to management about being pushed to breaking point in training.

They have relayed concerns that Hasler is not heeding requests to ease the strain to lighten the mood at Parkwood.

Titans chiefs are mindful the internal ructions cannot continue to fester and Hasler’s future will reach a flashpoint in the coming weeks.

Well-placed sources say Hasler has been working overtime in a bid to stop the rot and has not thrown in the towel amid reports the 64-year-old has privately flagged plans to retire at season’s end.

But for all Hasler’s hard work, he has been unable to strike a bond with Titans players, who are not responding to his methods.

As revealed in May by this masthead, Hasler’s three-year contract contains performance clauses that can see Titans bosses sever ties with the two-time premiership coach if he fails to make this year’s finals.

The Titans can terminate Hasler as soon as it becomes evident the Gold Coast are not a “mathematical chance” of reaching the top eight.

That scenario will arrive if the Titans lose to the Broncos on Sunday.

Last year’s eighth-placed side, Newcastle, sneaked into the finals ahead of Canberra on percentages after registering 30 competition points with 12 wins.

Hasler’s Titans are currently 17th on 14 competition points.

If they lose to the Broncos, the Coast (4-11) would need to win all remaining eight games to reach 12 wins and 30 competition points, but their dismal differential (-144) kills off any top-eight hopes.

In the run to the finals, the Titans face top-four side the Warriors twice, away games against the Dolphins and Sharks and meet defending premiers Penrith at home in round 22.

Titans owners last month released a statement backing Hasler, but the players’ voices will be heard and it will herald the departure of the former Manly coach before the start of the 2026 premiership.

Titans bosses have been inundated with expressions of interest from prospective NRL coaches in recent days.

Hasler has had a turbulent time at the Titans since ‘Cyclone Des’ landed on the Gold Coast midway through 2023 following the abrupt sacking of Justin Holbrook.

He began pulling the strings immediately behind the scenes, commissioning a purpose-built ‘dojo’ for pre-season wrestling sessions that were supposed to battle harden the Titans.

Instead they have become the NRL’s worst defensive team, leaking a staggering 456 points at 28.5 per game this season.

Hasler refused to allow Titans players to do media interviews for two months during the 2025 pre-season, further starving the NRL’s least supported club of relevancy.

The tactic has shown little evidence of leading to on-field success.

Hasler’s relationship with $900,000-a-season forward Fifita has also deteriorated, leading to the former Maroons star’s relegation to reserve grade.

Hasler inherited a lopsided roster invested heavily in forwards, but he added to that with the big-money signing of Reagan Campbell-Gillard, adding to an already overstacked pack.

Meanwhile he has tried to manufacture a spine including three fullbacks in Keano Kini, AJ Brimson and Jayden Campbell.

The results have been disastrous and will likely cost Hasler his job.

Former Broncos skipper Corey Parker says the club should part ways with Hasler immediately and give assistant Jim Lenihan the chance to prove himself as a head coach.

“They are a rabble, an absolute rabble,” Parker said.

Des Hasler's stint with the Gold Coast Titans is expected to conclude at the end of the season.
“We’re hearing that Des Hasler could retire or walk away.

“If that is the case, well just pull the trigger now, there’s no upside to it all having him there now.

“Des Hasler was brought to the club to instil a hard edge, but in actual fact the club has gone backwards.

“You can’t put up an argument that they’ve had some green shoots come through in any area. I’ve never been coached by Des. I like him as a person, but his record there is indefensible.

“To be honest, I like Jim Lenihan (as a successor). For some reason, clubs are reluctant to put in a guy who doesn’t have a high profile, but I think Lenihan has the goods. How can he ever get a profile if he doesn’t get a chance.

“If the chat is true about Des, the Titans could make a call and do it now and they don’t lose anything if Lenihan gets the job as caretaker for the final 10 rounds.

“They might come to the realisation in 10 weeks time that Lenihan can do the job, and if he can’t, then they can get someone else.”

Honestly , is ANYONE surprised ??
