FOUR-time grand final coach Des Hasler wants the NRL to implement a plan that would prevent clubs and fans from losing their star players during State of Origin.

Hasler told The Daily Telegraph his initiative involved playing Origin games on Monday nights with the NRL to have flexibility with the club draw.

The Hasler plan is to:

*   — HAVE split rounds around Origin games;

*   — PLAY three games the week before Origin, five matches the week after;

*   — TEAMS who are least affected by Origin selection play the first week;

*   — PLAYERS play Origin on Monday with players to then back up for their clubs the following weekend;

*   — Clubs have their star players throughout Origin, unlike the current system;

*    Draw for Origin period to be determined close to series.

"The NRL would have to convince the broadcaster (Channel 9) to shift Origin games to Monday," Hasler said. "Nine would win because this way they can cover NRL games with all the stars playing. This plan would help with player welfare and you wouldn’t have players being stood down. Players would have five days to recover.

"Clubs with only one or two players picked in Origin would play the first weekend.

"The remaining five matches — played between the ten clubs with heavy Origin commitments — would be played the following weekend.

"Wayne Bennett likes Origin games to be played in successive weeks but I just don’t think players would have time to recover from injury.”

Hasler wants the NRL to draw a square around the Origin period on the draw.

The schedule would have be released when it is known which teams would be hurt most through Origin selection.

A spokesman said the NRL believed Origin "was working well but will continue to look at the best ways to look after the welfare of players."

Why not ? - we're in the mood for a change. Think this is more likely to get up if the Blues win the series. If the Bananabenders win nothing will change.

Is every coach going to have a turn at having an Origin plan? Bennett and Hasler have had a go.
Come on Tooves. They're doing a ridiculous job and there needs to be an investigation led by you. :)

Hasler go get .......please Melbourne for years have been coping it, have a cry you please.
No sympathy for him, what about Brisbane as well or North Queensland every year no jt.
He has short memory they belted a big three less Melbourne last season, it is part of game. It would have been ok if as planned they played under strength teams with there halfs there would be no whinge.

As Richie Benaud said to Max Walker in the 12th Man.

'Tell your ...... story walking Des' (okay Richie said Max).

Funny how Desler was perfectly happy with Origin when here and at the Dogs when he hasn't been too disrupted by Origin.

Personally I think Origin needs to stay as is, it's never been bigger, never been more exciting (IMO), and to tinker with it is to give it a chance to screw it up.

SOO is like a weight handicap in racing.

It gives the Clubs who can't afford Representative Players a chance to get a couple of match points.

Plus it unveils future stars, with reserves getting a chance to play first grade.

Let it be and let RL shine for 3 nights a year here and Internationally :)

That's a great idea Des. Now f..k off you traitor, who want's to hear.
this is funny,yesterday when he was on the sunday footy show,he was ok with origin,now they lose again,he wants to change it,make up your mind Des

Just about every coach who loses their star players to Origin bitches and moans about it at some point, especially when they start losing games without them.

It was ok for Des and the Scumdogs last year when they had next to no players in Origin. But now they have lost 3 in a row during this years series (and there has only been one game played so far), suddenly he's weighing into the debate about the scheduling.

If Des wants to have a cry maybe he should give his old mate Wayne Pearce a call and complain about his son's off-field actions. After all, without Schitzel's pre-Origin night out at the Cross neither Hodkinson nor Reynolds would have even been selected, Daley would have gone with Piss and Baloney.

I can't understand why we can't play 1 full round, have 3 weeks off for origin and then play another full round? That three weeks could also be used as a transfer window and when all player contract negotiations must occur and be finalized.

Agree Steve O

They should play the pacific nations cup (or similar) at the same time so there are more games / the development games get some exposure

Going on the evidence, des's plan for the origin period must have been to lose as many games as possible.
