Des - "You make your own Luck"

Post match interview the press were talking to Des about some dud calls, injuries ect....
Des says " You make your own luck in this competition"....and never a truer word spoken.
I love this philosophy, as when you lose games it's so easy to reach into the excuse book as to "why" it was lost, when the best action is accountability and making it happen.
This is a great Attitude and is reflective of the "backs to the wall" performance we witnessed on Saturday night.
If you have the desire, belief and throw away the excuses....this is the Ultimate Road to success, as the players out will come back into an even stronger side...and those dud calls will at some stage turn around while staying positive...

I completely agree. But we have been on one hell of a run with game defining calls going against us over the last 2 seasons.
St Merge game at the death.
Rabbits SF at the death.
Eels at the death.
Newcastle at the death.

Agree on both counts.

And as I watch many other games I can’t think of a side that’s been more affected.

It’s sort of like “ oh well Manly has had their decade of dominance let’s cut them down to size again”.

100% K777 - some absolute rorts along the way and can't take a trick with injuries atm.
I take it more that Des was indicating, though we ave been on the back end of so much BS, gunna take care of what we can control and not lean on the other things we can't....as it's easy to get sidetracked with he negatives and allow it to drag you down and even accept losses as a result.
It's more Des bringing back that "Siege Mentallity" - officials hate us, opposition fans hate us, even damn injuries hate us...but....the side will compete the best we can, with what we got...

It’s so good to see isn’t it. That’s why he is such a successful coach. His teams are built upon a foundation of loyalty and belief. He’s also a master at instilling that good old Hasler siege mentality.

I'm not sure I agree with the throwaway line: "you make your own luck", especially when it comes to sport where the referee in football, and the umpire in cricket, plays such a vital part in decisions.
They are the final decision maker. It's not like a court of law where you can provide a defence against injustice and rely on 12 tried-and-trusted jury people to decide your fate.
Refs and umpires have been proven to be corrupt. We hate to think it happens in Australia but with betting being such a major factor in sport these days is it not conceivable that a ref and/or a Vidiot has been compromised.
Countless matches are won not by the best team on the day but by the "luckiest" team.
How can the phrase "you make you own luck" stand the test when Manly had worked the ball into the Doesn'tmatta 20-metre line, on full attack, with Kapow charging forward, and setting up for a further thrust towards another try when the ref/vidiot rules it's legal to steal the ball in a two-man tackle, allowing a 90-metre runaway try completely against the run of play? It changed the whole dynamic of the match.
Everyone knows that this ruling was wrong, and it should have been a penalty to Manly.
How is this attributed to "luck" when the words "incompetence" or "corruption" are much more applicable?

The top 8 seems to be working itself out , we are on the cusp and there’s really only one way to get in there , win more than you lose.
We need to beat those teams who will compete for positions 5-9. From here on they are not negotiable. These losses are like 4pt swings.

Has our Des mellowed too much or is it just a smokescreen that the mad scientist is throwing up at the media..:rofl::rofl:

I reckon it's just another tactic to keep us under the radar.

It's clever what he's done, because it's the media who are asking all these questions about dud calls against us, so it already has a profile out there, no need for Des to add any more to it.

If he did have a whinge can you imagine how quickly the same media would turn on him & call us a pack of whingers?

At the same time it's clearly stating we aren't victims & that "WE DON'T CARE".

The officials are corrupt, the NRL hierarchy are gangsters too - we all know that...but the thing is does it help to dwell on the negatives and then use the Ultimate throwaway line "we lost because of the refs "??
The factor Des was referring to imo, is to play so damn hard and good, to take the result out of the officials hands....as they did Saturday night.
You made valid points on a few decisions that were bewildering, but this only reinforces the fact if the team plays well enough, even these decisions can't take away the win.
Des stating "you make your own luck" is the ability to conrol what you can by competing hard and good will come of it...if Manly sooked and sulked about poor decisions, we would lose most games including that game against the Eels.

I doubt Des actually believes in luck.
I've never been able to pinpoint it myself.

What he is doing (which is the gist of your post) is directing the media's attention where he wants it.
