re. hayne's effort: don't know the bryce gibbs one, but thurston was kicking at a player who had the ball (just), whereas hayne was going for a loose ball along with the winger. In principle he's entitled to try to kick it out of play. I'd say he has a fair case that his contact was just an accident, maybe made worse by his trying to pull out of the kick.

I thought it was all about the knees directed at his head.  Hayne is the current pin-up boy of the NRL, so he'll get treated leniently.

It looks terrible in slow mo, but viewed at full speed it is more in his favour.

I want him to play, but you are spot on KE. Slow mo it looked deliberate and bad, full speed it looked like a justifiable play.
