There has been considerable speculation in relation to the St George Illawarra Dragons and Russell Packer who was released on Monday from custodial care, as a result of pleading guilty to a charge of assault.

The Club has not sought to register a playing contract with the NRL, however, it has agreed to play a part in his rehabilitation through its established programs in Education and Welfare and in particular, because of the long association Dragons Director of Recruitment and Retention, Peter Mulholland, has had with Russell and his family.

Russell has a strong desire to spend time with his fiancee and two children, continue his education and seek employment in the community, ahead of any rugby league priority.

Clearly, for Russell to return to the NRL he will need to demonstrate to the Dragons and the NRL that he is ready to have a contract registered.

The Dragons will provide further updates if and as required.

Statement reads like the Dragons knew they had no chance of getting the contract registered so they're trying to sound like a bunch of nice guys.

Here's an idea - spend that effort on a guy that didn't stomp on someones head, who actually deserves a shot. It's not like they'll be competing for the 8 this year...

Is he an Australian resident? If not surely he would be a candidate for deportation.
He would have been if he wasn't successful in having his sentenced reduced to one year, any more, he would have been deported after serving his time.

I wasn't for that either, but at least he was pending his court date so he wasn't officially guilty of anything.

This is more like if we made it very clear that we would be signing Jamil Hopoate as soon as he was released, then released a transparent statement full of waffle that basically said "yeah nah the NRL knocked back our request to him reinstated so we're no focusing on footy right now. We just want him to get his life back together because we care about that stuff soooooo much..."

Fair point - either way both clubs were trying to polish a turd

I am a bit concerned that StGeorge say " he will need to demonstrate to the Dragons and the NRL that he is ready to have a contract registered."
Should it not read, "that he is ready to be part of the community" ?

Just put him in the same programme that ferguson and barba went through and that'll get the NRL rubber stamp. He should be right for round one.
