Our club's current abundance of hookers, combined with the fact they don't actually 'hook' in scrums anymore, got me thinking (always dangerous).

I've decided we need a completely new name for this position.

Quarterback? That's my suggestion.

Reactions: Rex
We really only have 2 hookers, Ballin and hodges won't play again
Its fair to call Api & Parcell quality hookers.
I feel for Ballin who has been the ultimate clubman & unsung hero, but a big part of the struggle in Manlys attack has been that explosive thrust in the ruck & we now have it.
Hodges best chance of game time in 2016 is the 9's....& that's a ?

3/8???
Does not have much of a ring to it...
But at least you took the topic for what it was.
Seriously, 'hooker'????
Out of date, irrelevant, anachronistic, poor connotations for no good reason.
Therefore, this is not a joke thread, but a serious question.
It's one of, if not the, most important position in rugby league.
What should this position be called as the game moves (sluggishly forward) into the 21st century?

You are right, the dummy half duty is the only thing that remains of the traditional hooking role.

But think about it.

"Dummy half".

We want our most talented player to aspire to be a dummy?

Ridiculous.

I love the tradition of the sport, but as to nomenclature it's time for change and we may as well come up with the new name because sure as eggs someone will.

Of course the term "hooker" is out of date, anachronistic and antiquated. It is dificult to find a more contemporary, in-vogue or modern label for a hooker. The term is indeed antediluvian, superannuated, timeworn, outdated and archaic, but that is to be expected. It is the oldest profession in the world.

Scrum half sounds better than Night Crawler.

NRL.com asked Sattler for his appraisal of the Jets ready to take off in 2016.

Matt Parcell (Sea Eagles)

Good judges have touted Parcell as a future Queensland No.9 but with Matt Ballin and Apisai Koroisau also at the club a spot in the Manly 17 for Round 1 is by no means guaranteed. Lightning quick out of dummy-half, Parcell scored a record five tries for Ipswich in their Elimination Final win over Easts and was Man of the Match in the Jets' State Championship win over Newcastle.

Sattler says: "What I love about Matty is his speed, his vision, his evasive skills and his engine. If the game went for a week he'd still be running at the same speed. I think he is quite potentially the next Origin hooker after Cameron Smith retires."

Instead of hooker, we could call it "Escort"
lol - Escort should only be used for the pricey and classy ones. The cheap and average have a whole list of other names.
Commentary box - Terrible news for Manly. The Escort's gone down so they have to resort to one of the Ho-s.:D

So Hodges would still be a hooker then?
