Former high profile rugby league player-turned-nightclub bouncer John Hopoate has been charged following the serious assault of a man in a Kings Cross street


As a result, a 33-year-old man suffered head injuries and was rushed to St Vincents Hospital where he underwent surgery and remains in a serious condition.

‘‘Unfortunately he has had to undergo brain surgery as a result of an assault up at Kings Cross,’’ Deputy Commissioner Dave Owens told reporters on Sunday.

Don't jump to conclusions. Remember somebody else who got charged and it turned out they were not guilty of anything? Brett something-or-other, from memory. Even Chris Houston's drug supply charges were chucked out the other day because it turned out there was no evidence.

A closer reading of the story suggests it is not the bloke in hospital who was assaulted by Hopoate, but someone else. It will probably be some time before the truth is known.

Yeah SER8, reads elsewhere that the bloke in hospital was bashed by another bouncer, just with Hoppa the media were always going to use his name I guess (he was involved as such but what level isn't out yet). Mind you, someone should be in the **** for the level of the assault.

hoppas son is a very good "kid" he doesnt need mentoring always says hello and is polite and comes across as a real placid easy going bloke ,as said above just another media beatup and blown out of proportion,johns a nice guy aswell and i think often maligned for his past which at the end of the day compared to what we see some of these so called roll models in the game today do is nothing

i agree with john being a nice bloke, he just does stupid things and i truly believe he doesnt think before doing things.

when he was on the drink with the boys during his playing days he was never a angry drunk, he was just easily misled, the likes of beaver and nik kosef had a ball egging him on to do stupid things on nights out during their younger days.
unfortunately the hiding marty bella  gave him in the back lane behind the steyne hotel never knocked some sense into him.

Why a photographer thinks it is fair to approach and attempt to photograph someone at their home is beyond me. Just very poor form and it is no wonder that some of them have such a low standing in the community.

How this article got published is beyond me, i love the part where it mentions the photographer served in Afghanistan, How does that matter they are only tying to get the readers to feel for the stupid guy.

People are always quick to jump to conclusions with regard to Hoppa. He has never been charged with anything against the guy who died, only for assaulting his brother:

I upset my brother-in-law (Tiger Supporter) this morning when he came out and started telling my wife about the guy dying and started to tell her about Hoppa the ex-Manly player and insinuating that he was the one who bashed him. He didn't like it when I came out and said "and which team was he playing for when he got his bad reputation for the finger poking episode".

Its not good for Hoppa that someone died in the incident, whether Hoppa hit that guy or not.
