RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

I wish GE. Loved a flutter my whole life and gambling moguls from Packer to Robert Sangster has always interested me. Just dreaming!

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

What a wonderful legacy James Packer is leaving the world. Thousand of lives ruined by gambling, when he could be creating captivating TV shows and movies like The Great Escape, based on Manly's heart-stopping win against the Worriers this season.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Yeah ...its all Packer's fault people are gambling addicts...

Just like it's Toyota and Ford's fault people die on roads.

While we're at lets blame tooheys and Brittish American Tobacco for cancer and liver disease.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Sorry, I'm back.

I was just collecting my winnings from giving 5:2 that napper would post something like that above.

wink *cough off season* wink *ducks* relax, I'm kidding and that's official!

I'm with you MB interest wise. When I was a young'un my dad's company did a lot of work on jupiters casino on the gold coast. I remember pouring over the blue prints and being amazed at all the behind the scene stuff they did and had built in.

Shoulda kept a copy!

No, it's not. However, his grandfather and father did create family entertainment and information with their magazines, newspapers and TV shows. That was laudable.
To use the money that these 'noble' enterprises reaped and put it into gambling dens says a lot about James Packer. He is getting rich on the misery of others when he could have stayed in media and produced worthwhile entertainment.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Underbelly is sending them broke. Seems every cast member ends up on their pay roll doing other pointless crap.

maybe James packer will get his 'alan bond' deal like his dad did....with ...alan bond

Perhaps....if he hadn't blown such a large amount of that money on casinos.

Really? How do you lose money owning a casino?

Quite easily, apparantly. Or maybe it's just a trait that Jamie 'One-Tel' Packer has picked up over time.

It's part of the disease of our culture.

Capitalism, more appropriately titled selfish capitalism is built on unbridled greed, and on a callous disregard for the impact of actions on others.

When is enough enough? Never.

Unbridled gambling is just another manifestation of unbridled greed and of unbridled selfish capitalism.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Nein has 4 billion dollars of debt and in talks with the banks as I type this trying to stave of bankruptcy. I would imagine that the NRL contract would be null and void if the network went down. Sure there would be litigation, but really, they would have to stand in line for any miserable piece of the action. Ch 7 and Fox would then fight it out. Ch Ten is not in the game, not even in the ballpark. The AFL is in the same predicament. My view is that the private funds that bought the shop will take a haircut, as will Goldman Sachs and other investment banks.

Some more 'news' today:

So the drama continues.

Happy for you smart ones to dissect and report, as it's the off season and all.

3.31pm and all's well! (except at nine and belmore, or bel-less)

I imagine if Nine went into administration, it would be up to the organisations that control Nine's debt as to whether they hold onto the TV rights.
Nine will still exist, but perhaps under another owner who will still want sports content, and in NSW and QLD it would be disasterous if they let another tv network get the rights.
The first priority of any new interests in NIne would be to retain the rights, and perhaps shave expenses in other areas. Nine is very heavily laden with big name personalities and some of these will have to go.

That's right, they might be big in their own minds, but there's still a lot of them.
You could probably name 20-30 who work for nine, but how many do you know off hand that work for Seven or TEN ?, not many I would say.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Nine’s board was informed this morning that Goldman Sachs has agreed to the deal which would see mezzanine debt holders emerge with 7.5 per cent of Nine’s equity and warrants that would give them upside to any future sale of Nine above the current estimates of its value.

RE: Is channel 9 going broke?

Just announced:

The lenders agreed to a debt for equity swap in channel nine 'removing' all of nine's debt.

This will avoid any receivership or administration concerns.

probably result in a large number of channel 9 staff getting the chop i imagine. Time to trim the fat
