First Grader
Tragedy if he is.

We should all write to David Smith and demand an increase in the allowance for long serving players

Gift on way to Raiders
Those close to Glenn Stewart are now saying it's almost certain he will depart Manly, most probably for Canberra. The popular 'Gift' is desperate to stay and his teammates want him there, but there's just not enough cash to retain him. The Sea Eagles have done well over the years to hold onto the nucleus of their side but this is one in which they may have to concede defeat.

Snake, Foz , Killer just to name a few we're all gone as well if you believe the reports. Won't believe anything until its confirmed.

Obviously the word has sunk in that the NRL won't be changing the long serving player rules anytime soon, probably not until Manly are right royally done over as a competitive force. The current rules that favour buying success will continue and we know who that favours.

It would be his last contract so he needs to maximise his earnings. Manly could never go 600k+, Raiders could

More importantly, did he pass his physical today ?

No doubt Greensnot is feeding the Dogs inflated future salary cap figures while telling clubs like Manly that there will be little or no increases over the next couple of years. We lose Gift and it will be all due to that bald headed f***wit.

g'day all,The bottom line is that glen is no longer in the top echelon of backrowers and if he can get someone to pay overs for his services good luck to him and sentiment is not enough for us to do so.
cheers mike

Great manly man but we have seen Kennedy, Monaghan, beaver, bell, kite, etc. leave over the last 10 years and we have all wondered how long it will take before we recover. Truth is we will be ok. We have guys like Chee Kam, Rhys Armstrong (NSW under 18's), Liam knight (NSW 18's) coming through. Buhrer showed as well what he can do when given game time.

The NRL don't understand this. On one hand they want the fans to show loyalty by becoming members and going to games, while at the same time they have a negative system that forces long serving FAVOURITE CLUBS SONS to leave or retire.

Players like Gift are much more value to a club than just how good they are on the field for the next contract. The NRL and its cap ignores all of that and works to break down club spirit.

And yet the NRL wonders why crowds and tv ratings are down and why fans aren't opting to become members each year.

Clubs like the Dogs or Rorters don't understand or teach those lessons.

If Gifty leaves, he'll miss out on 200 first grade games and life membership at the football club. I understand players want to do better for themselves but I favour players that are more like Beaver. No amount of money can buy him to play against Manly.

I hope Gifty is more like Beaver.
If he makes less money at Manly, I'm sure there are jobs after football.
Why would any sane player wants to play against their club mates and friends, and bro? This is home!

Just to play devils advocate here....how old is Gifty now, 30, 31?
Generally your best backrowers start to decline in form and skill after 30, correct? They have hit their peak and are tapering off their careers.

I know he would still contribute a lot to the team even if he did start to slow down and not be quite as 'electric' in attack. But if his best is seemingly behind him and he can get excellent inflated money elsewhere, perhaps let him go.

(but we really should try avoiding this - even a slow Gifty at 80% of his peak is still better than most backrowers)

To even consider leaving the northern beaches to live in Canberra the offer would have to be at least 1 million a season. Even then you'd think about it for about a minute and knock it back.

God yes. The most boring town in Australia. Even the delights of porn and fireworks at Fyshwick couldnt get me there. Northern Beaches instead thanks

I live in Canberra and I can't tell you much I appreciate your sentiments. The more that people believe what you say the less likely they are to come here and that suits me just fine.

For the record, Canberra has the highest standard of living in the country of any major city, the best facilities, the lightest traffic, the longest life expectancy. The lowest unemployment. There is something on every weekend from car shows to country fairs. The restaurants are world class and the crime rate extremely low. We are a short drive to the snow and a short drive to the South Coast. The Schools and Universities are world class.

Yep, it's just awful, I don't know why I stay here, but I really urge you and all the others to stay where you are.

Edit: You haven't been able to get fireworks here for years.
