League: Faumuina lassoed by Cowboys
By STEVE KILGALLON - Sunday Star Times |
Sunday, 24 December 2006

The travels of Sione Faumuina have come to an end, the former Warrior signing with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Faumuina went absent without leave from his new English club, Harlequins, three weeks ago and won't be going back to London.

Chased by the club, media, and even his agent, the two-cap Kiwi told the Sunday Star-Times a fortnight ago that he was destined for Brisbane, to see his mother and two younger siblings.

Sources told the Star-Times yesterday that Faumuina had stayed on to find a new club, and has agreed terms with the Cowboys, the 2005 grand finalists based in Townsville -a swift return to the NRL after he left the Warriors in September with the last year of his contract there cancelled for disciplinary indiscretions.

Faumuina declined to comment on the news, but it is expected the Cowboys will announce his signing early in the New Year after securing a release from Harlequins, who will lose the erratic lock without him playing a game in the Super League.

I wonder how long it will be before he has a dust up with their half back?

Hmmm - maybe a blessing in disguise, alhtough he would have been great if got off the jungle juice there is a good chance he would have spent too much time pissing on than playing footy especially with the bright lights of Manly & the city only being a short taxi ride away.

Given Townsville's drug culture and the prominent role played in it by certain Cowboys, Faumuina should be the real deal for the Cowboys.

Sione rides with Cowboys

Former New Zealand international Sione Faumuina has been thrown an NRL lifeline after North Queensland confirmed they had secured his signature for the next two seasons.

Faumuina has signed with the Cowboys until the end of 2008 and attended training for the first time today.

North Queensland coach Graham Murray said Faumuina's arrival had further strengthened his squad for next season.

"Sione is a tremendous player and has a skill level with the ball that complements his athleticism," Murray said.

"His versatility across the field is top class but our focus will be to provide as much opportunity for him to play well in his preferred position as a backrower."

Faumuina, who has played two Tests for New Zealand, cited personal reasons for his shock decision to walk away from a three-year deal with English Super League side Harlequins late last year.

It followed the 25-year-old being dumped by the New Zealand Warriors for repeated "cases of serious misconduct" related to alcohol in August.

Webb, Bowen, Faumuina, Jason Smith, Thurston, Ty Williams, Southern, O'Donnell, Payne, Bowman etc etc...they are amassing quite the team.
