Tonight showed just how far off the pace we are. Trent Robinson once said in an interview this year, that they played so last year. We'll we looked 1970 without the aggression. We look really slow, our forwards run with no agrression and we recieve the ball flat. Roosters were so dynamic and vibrant. Our flank defense is shocking.
I'm glad we're not in the finals. We'll only embarrass ourselves this year.
Welcome Barrett, Myles, Brown and Co.
Thanks Manly for not delivering us the wooden spoon .Thanks to all leaving.

Easts had our measure all night. Everything they did was faster and more direct and their speed and agility cut us to pieces.

When you compare both teams, they have at least 3 of their outside backs who can run 100 metres under 11 seconds. We do not have that.

Hiku is a prime example, he continually got caught out of position and left for dead by Tupou both in the air and out wide. They got tries from his mistakes, we do not have a threat in that if there is a loose ball can someone sprint away? Tom Turbo must be in the team next year as our team badly needs an injection of raw speed.

The Broncos, Cowpokes and Roosters have shown that the method to win now is big mobile and fit forwards. We are lacking in these areas and that has to improve or we will be among the also rans again.

Let's hope that over the next few seasons 'our Trent' is better than 'their Trent'.

Our Trent certainly has theirs (aka Foreskin Face) well covered in the looks department. Clearly the latter was hiding behind the door when the looks were being handed out.

We have been trying to emulate our 2011 formula (and falling short of that), in an era where cutting edge athleticism is dominating games.

RTS - huge brute strength (sh#ts all over GI these days), unbelievable speed, and has that NFL-like confidence/zest about him.
Daniel Tupoa - a leaping freak with blinding speed. (a recruitment winner for them)
Moa/JWH, Evans, Cordner - just murdering defensive lines.

Our boys were doing all they could with their limitations.

I fear that it may take a bit longer than anticipated to becoming a force in the near future, as we are facing a DIFFERENT beast with some of these teams.

Whatever Roosters did leaping from 2012 into 2013 - is what we should be doing.;)

Yep, roosters are a very strong althetic side. They are definitely doing something right in that department. Manly rely on what had worked in the past and on the old footy heads of our experienced star players such as lyon snake matai etc but we are falling off the pace. We do show signs of that passion which made us a great side but we can't seem to maintain it and last night when we fell behind the players knew their season looked over and the flood gates opened.

It could of been a lot different was disgusted with the refs call on that knock on then another soft penalty telling Manly to tone down their aggression and then dce gets injured and we go down 16-0. I think if we stayed close Manly would of been a different animal. But once the game started to slip so did the players realising their season. They would of been very emotional before kick off and then suddenly just after half time that let that soft try and you could see the players hearts sink and that was it.

Looking forward to the new coaching staff and strength and conditioning team can do. It needs an over haul to go with the defence and attacking plays.

Trouble is I don't see anyone next year that's going to change things.

Myles, a good hard head but well past his peak.

Brown, more versatile ( ie line TRed) than a superstar.

Korisau , will add some zip at 9 BUT we go backwards in defence with him.

Parcel / Wright , too young to feature just yet.

SO,

Get used to being in about position 9-12 because unless teams currently above is go into a slide I see more of the same for 2016.

2017

Our oldies getting really old, so same or worse position .

2018 and beyond , that's the big question mark??

You know, I wouldn't say that Daniel Tupou has blinding speed for a winger. I've seen him run down a few times. But the fact that he burnt Peta Hiku for pace last night shows just how slow this current Manly team is without the likes of Tom Trbojevic or Clint Gutherson.

At one point last night RTS stepped around Snake and then left him for dead on sheer pace.

I am hoping to see the Guthovic duo on the wings next year. Tafua to the bench and Hiku....maybe he could play 5/8. To be fair to him, he is a talent who is only playing wing because Gutherson went down in the first game of the season. I think Hiku could be spending more time in the centres next season.

Tactically speaking, we are still playing in 2007-11. Slow the ruck, wide defense up and in, dominate in defense via line speed and aggression and hunt in packs to minimize their yardage gains and basically beat them into submission. Our outside defense was able to stifle most attacking raids and the momentum gained by the aggressive defense systems allowed some very talented backs to score almost at will. Basically we won games with an attacking defensive system.

This would quite possibly still be a very successful game plan, IF we could pull it off. We currently lack the size, aggression and line speed to effect this tactic in the middle. In actual fact WE are the team getting beaten into submission with aggressive defense.

Working the ruck and slowing the play the ball down has resulted in us being penalized in the ruck with almost monotonous regularity, giving up field position, possession and momentum every_single_time. Whilst I've often felt we were getting unfairly pinged in the ruck, the simple fact is this: it's the epitome of stupidity to not look closely at this area and make_a_change!! Let them up faster? Trade those extra few seconds of time gained by holding down for the better gain of NOT gifting them field position and possession to boot. Sure they'll make a few extra yards per set, but is that worse than 30-40 free meters and a fresh set? Not even close. Four, five or six extra sets per game that invariably start in perfect attacking position. And we've proven time and again that our up and in (and slooooow) defense out wide is ohhh so vulnerable to a decent kick and a winger who can jump. Or even just catch and fall over. For F**CK'S SAKES!!

It's obvious to me, and I'm no technical wizard. I'm an ex front rower who enjoyed the simplicity of a game where "if they're not wearing your colours, and don't have a whistle, you can hurt them". That's all the instruction I required before a game.

These guys are highly paid athletes who've literally done nothing else (with a few exceptions of course) than play bloody football. They're not working 8-10hr shifts five days a week, sucking it up and going to training only to get minimal sleep and do it all over again. On f*ck all $$ an hour. These guys are getting paid boardroom dollars on what would apparently seem to be floor sweeping hours, with no responsibility except to themselves and the fans of the club they happen to be playing for. Surely some of these guys are smart enough to suggest that some changes should be made in the way they're playing and then perhaps lead the team in the physical war on the field? I'm hoping that in years to come that leadership role will be filled by Jake T, DCE, Gutho and guys like Demetriou and Santini and that young hooker from the U'20's.

When you step back and look at the guys we've lost over the last few seasons, the guys that lead the defensive brutality that gave us that intimidatory edge, things kind of come into perspective. Gifty, BoChoc, Kingy, Nood, Kitey et al.. That's a lot of forward power to lose and it's really hurt us this year.

I guess, in the infamous words of one Paul Keating, it's "the recession we had to have"?

You know what?? F*ck that sh*t. We are Manly. We don't do recessions. We don't do mediocrity. We don't do "mathematical chances". We kick ass, take names and go home with the Winfield Cup under one arm, with a pair of Seabirds carrying a carton of Tooheys under the other.

Amen!

OK, I think I owe Bearfax an apology. Komori, you take the prize for the longest post.
It's annoying tho, I get on a roll and I can't type as fast as I think and find it hard to properly express my thoughts to their fullest. Also I get sidetracked by other thoughts. But honestly I just love getting on my high horse and having a rant :D

frankly your post was too long, but i did read the last paragraph; and i must say i am really pumped up now; can i use that as my signature?

If Tommy or Gutho were on the wing last night they both would have got Annihilated. They are both fullbacks and don't have the quickness or know positioning for a winger. A Specialist Position the club does not truly have

You're welcome ;)

*provided you read the rest of my rambling, slightly incoherent discourse!

I'm joking you don't have to read it all lol :D
