We seem to be carrying a few niggling injuries with our backline players at the moment..........which is meaning Jamie Buhrer has had to fill in at centre, which is far from a great option.

Do we need a back on the bench for cover?

I think we could drop Taufua back to the bench, bring in Whare or whoever, and use Jorge as a back rower and also there as cover.

I'm not saying this for a long term solution, maybe just whilst Brett and Matai and Wolfman seem to have these niggling injuries which could flare up.

I think Buhrer is not a bad fall back option. He had troubles on Saturday night, but he's filled in their before quite well. Plus carrying an outside back on the bench is a bit of waste if no one gets injured. I'm not sure I like the idea of using Jorge in the forwards. Big difference from taking the occasional hit up and kick returns, to having to do one off the ruck work after making plenty of tackles before hand.

I don't like the way the bench (or 'reserves' as they used to be called) has evolved in RL. We now have specialists who manage less than 20 minutes per game. That's not how RL is supposed to be played. It is an endurance sport.
Either reduce the interchanges to four, so that once a player is replaced he has to complete the match (unless injured illegally) or just have two bench players.

In the Parra and Cowboys games, Buhrer's defence in the centres was exposed big time. Now I know that there are obvious reasons for this but it is a concern and worthy of discussion. I would have thought that putting Kieran to the centres and Trex to 5/8 would be less risky from a defensive view point albeit limiting for our attack.

Agreed, though I think in that scenario it would make more sense for Buhrer or Gift to slide to 5/8th in attack.

Yes he has had a few problems, but he's also had some very good games filling in at centres, not so much this year but definitely last year. Just a case of him doing a bit more work on it in the training paddock and the communications that side of the field sorting themselves out. Its were our wingers and fullbacks can have a big influence on our defence without actually having to make a tackle. Poor reads in defence are more of a result of bad communication than anything.

Vs the eels, buhrer was on the wing not centre. He was exposed in defence there. I think his centre defence is solid.
