Perrett Trial

maxta

First Grader
Only a trial against again a mostly reserve grade team.
Thing is, Perrett looked serious and hungry.
Bounced players off at Will and even after decent contact with 3-4 players on him, had an offload - that was sweet and on the mark.
Also Cust looked good playing direct snd Keppie the Eels recruit was solid.
The thread is Perrett- he was a standout and thats about it....ummm that centre we just picked up Ofemaasaga ??? ran the ball with threat on most occasions

Agree Suli also....limited opportunity was a handful.
Both teams well below full strength making it tough ti judge....that’s why I basically seen Perrett a standout.
Would not matter the opposition, tonight would have put a dent in them and had the power to offload with an accurate pass, which is a cash in for TT and DCE

From what I’ve seen and read about Perrett, he is the rugby league equivalent of a “flat track bully”. When he plays reserve grade, he dominates like no other. When he plays first grade, he underwhelmes.

We desperately need him to perform this year in first grade, but history suggests this won’t happen. Would love to be proven wrong.

Perrett's first hit up was hardly awe inspiring. He ran up with the pace of Marty Bella and got pushed back easily. But from there he put more oomph into his runs and not only bent the line, but showed a couple of times that even with 2-3 defenders on him, he was hard to take off his feet.

I actually got the feeling that Lloyd would have looked even better if he had managed to pop a couple of offloads.

Suli's hands let him down last night, but he showed that if he held on to the ball then his runs could be very damaging to opposition defences.

I thought LG impressed more than Hodko who's main advantage is his goal kicking. His kicking was good and that one he put on for Jetski's try was as good as any.

Elliot was solid without being spectacular, but at least he showed that we have a backup fullback when needed.

Going on the assumption that Api might be still sidelined for the first week or two of the season, and that Tom will not play, my team for the Tigpies game would be:

Elliot, Taufua, Suli, Parker, Garrick, Elgey, Cherry-Evans (c), Fonua-Blake, Fainu, Taupau, Thompson, Sironen, J. Trbojevic (vc). Bench - Hodkinson, Perrett, Gosiewski, Sipley

Suli and parker in the centers.... the pussycats will be licking their lips, our backline is really bad without walker

With no Walker, no Kelly and Elliot forced to play fullback with Tom injured, right now its basically what we have to work with.

After starting in the centres last night, I'll honestly be surprised if Suli and Parker don't get the 3 & 4 jumpers in round one.

Perrett has always been good against reserve grade opposition. If he gets some game time against the Chooks we should see if he’s made real improvements in his fitness and attitude. His first hit up last night was like watching the advance of a marshmallow glacier.

I don’t understand why so many fans want Parker to be put out by the curb for collection. He let in a lot of tries last year but he was the poor bunny posted at the end of a disfunctional and uncoordinated defensive line. I saw a few scraps of good play from him last year even though he had never been coached at a first grade level. He will never be blindingly fast but he’s solid and I don’t think he made any significant gaffs in the trials. Give him a year with Des and he just might turn into a Robbo clone.

Going against the grain here, but that hit up from Perrett after we scored in the 2nd half was probably the softest run I've seen, ever.

Closely followed by the next hit up he took.

Admittedly there was improvement in his runs after that.

I expected more from both him and Frank W, given the opposition, and the fact they should be leading that side around. ( perrett was doing a lot of organisational pointing lol).

Disappointed in both of them, but it is a long season, with time to impress.

Yep needs some araldite on the mits, but hard to stop when full speeds
Drop it 5 times in first grade you get flogged. If you play first grade the ball should not have to be put in a breadbasket for you to catch it. And he can’t pass either. Wing at best( which is what I’d do) or Blacktown to restore confidence. To be honest if Miski was in top 30 I’d have him in there 100 per cent. Has all the attributes.Sorry but the hype doesn’t match reality with Suli. Still can’t grt past the fact that this “ damaging runner” has scored three times in 30 plus games.. Pair him with Parker in centres and we are toast.

Masters and Jennings will eat them alive. Time to look at youth and speed. Funa and Garrick for mine..Just the mention of a Suli Parker combination shows just how much this Walker fiasco has done to the club.

I can’t argue those numbers and there is no excuse.....I have coached an U11s side recently and they know the value of ball retention.
If it was a Storm type side they would control field position and rack up 50, if gifted that number of turnovers....

Yeah something was Cleary wrong last night.

15 games last year for 6 errors.

Tonight was 5/6 errors in 20mins.

I still saw enough from him that if he holds the ball, he will be a destructive attacking weapon ... Hopefully on the wing.
I think it was a classic case of trying too hard. He went looking for work, so the attitude was there.

Career wise you would have to think this is Perrets make or break year. If he fails to live up , his next contract will be very likely be performance based at best. The Des team has done some great things with front rowers destined to potential obscurity. Perretts still young enough but will need to establish himself this year, the last of his current contract

I suspect this will be helpful and hopefully he can gain some confidence and press on. He has some skills if he is eager to mix it upfront

Suli is another T-Rex . Has all the size, power and ability to be a wrecking ball but just not enough ticker to take it to the top level required. Only hope is that Des can get into his head and get him to that mentallity. Personally I think he's a sacking incident waiting to happen.
