Question: players on minimum contracts

Have been thinking about something for quite a while in regards to players on minimum contracts?

Can their place in the top 30 be taken if they are replaced by someone of equal or greater value?

For example Garrick and Elliott to replace Funa and Parker?

Obviously the relegated players would revert to Blacktown.

Would love to be able to cut some dead wood in this way namely Funa, Parker, Perrett and Winterstein.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

I hope so!!

Top 30 resets every year.

So in theory we could exclude the above mentioned players?

Yes.

The top 30 isn't contract value based except for a minimum value. You could conceivably leave out the most expensive players if you wanted to.

I think minimum contract for a top 30 player is 110k, but not certain.

I'm not for a moment suggesting I want Winterstein in our match day 17, but I would argue he is definitely good enough to be in our top 30.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how does that then relate back to the salary cap?

Salary cap is for the players named in the top 30. Players not in the top 30 do not come under the salary cap but cannot play first grade, except under extenuating circumstances.
Would surely retain their contract value causing a breach in the 2nd tier cap though? Or does that not exist anymore?

Your top 30 is your top 30 players by contract value - you can't leave out your most expensive players, or mid priced players.... or any players really. Case in point Mr Plod this year - was in our top 30 purely on the basis of his contract value despite him not even lacing up a boot. Whoever are the 30 highest paid players at the club that is your top 30 and that needs to come under the salary cap restrictions

Thanks chip and chase this was my understanding as well. So that the-raises the original question can you switch out your lowest paid players for players of equal value?

What about if you have released a player to another club but are still paying a sizeable part of his salary which is within the top 30 salaries of your club?
Does that non-playing player get classified as part of your 30-man roster?

I don't think so. You have certain dates that you have to nominate top 28, top 29 and top 30 by. Once those names are locked in then you would need special dispensation to alter the make up of the squad - which you could get if there were injuries etc.... case in point was Fainu this year.

I think once June 30 deadline passes your top 30 is sealed and you need a note from Todd to alter it. Hence the last minute horse trading and mid season transfers in that last week of June

Good question and I've never really been able to get my head around how this works. I would assume if the portion of the contract that remains on our books puts it in the list of top 30 salaries then I would assume so.....but who knows. I mean this year we released Lussick and Hastings and they came out of top 30, so I'm assuming we were able to move them on for a significant enough portion of their contract value that they didn't remain in squad. But if you go back to the farcical Mr Plod scenario then we couldn't on sell his services this year so he remained in the squad and sucked up cap despite not even being in the country let alone at another club.
