RIP Dempsey

I remember an article in the paper (probably the MD) where both he and John Gray’s wives were having babies at the same time, possibly at Manly Hospital.

Must have been around the time he coached the Sea Eagles’ reserves, circa 1981.

RIP Dempsey.
I was in a Manly Hospital ward with him in Dec 2015. He was still pretty fit then. He was surprised that I remembered him as a Manly player but he had a pretty memorable name!

I just saw on the Marlins fb page that a former Marlin and Sea Eagle Dempsey Joy passed away. I didn’t know anything about him but looks like he predominantly played rugby for the Marlins before switching codes to the Sea Eagles in ‘75. On www.rugbyleagueproject.org, lists him playing 1st Grade in ‘75 and ‘77. It appears he was a fairly prominent sportsman in the Manly area in the mid 70’s so thought some of the older brigade, or Manly locals, may remember him.

This is from the Marlins page:

VALE DEMPSEY JOY

Dempsey Joy, a born and bred Manly boy out of Christian Brothers (now St Paul's) was a tremendous athlete in his early years. A representative swimmer and surfer, Dempsey excelled at Rugby League and Rugby Union. He was an abrasive forward, fearless tackler with explosive speed. During his formative years at St Matthews and then Manly Rugby it was observed by many coaches that he would be a very effective League player. Despite that Dempsey would go on to a remarkable 167 games for Manly with 127 in 1st Grade before finally linking up with Rugby League in 1975. Dempsey would also coach the Manly 1st Grade side and serve as the clubs President in 1995 & 1996. Dempsey Joy is an iconic Manly sportsman and his name will always bear significance in the Manly community particularly local organisations like the Manly Surf Club, Rugby Club and the Sea Eagles.

Sorry HM had a quick look (albeit on my phone) and didn’t see this.

Well he often said Rugby was the game they played in heaven ..... but I don't think he will be too disappointed to find out they actually play league ..... RIP (in) Dempsey ....

PSS .. It gives you a start when contemporaries pass away .... I bet there are a few yarns being told at the Golden Oldies golf day ...
