SMH article about Manly’s shambolic salary cap situation

Jake will be on 1 million next year? What in the actual ****! He was never even close to a million dollar player. Tom sure but jurbo LOL a few weeks ago he made 29 meters in 5 runs over 80 minutes 🤣
It’s only because they couldn’t pay him $1m four years ago so they back ended it or so Dessie told me!

$2.4 mil next year for Jake and Tom. Fu*k me drunk is this, club for real !!!!
2026 is going to be worse than 2025. What "Bozo" and I use that term loosely made that insane deal.
On a positive note, at least that's less than what the club will be paying the Shoe.

Can we read the article and comprehend it before we go off half cocked. The brothers are on big money next year because their contracts were BACKENDED. It says it there in black and white. That means instead of getting the same amount each year of their contract, they took less money in the initial years and the balance is made up in the final years. So instead of making outrageous claims about Jake being the highest paid forward in the game, use your head.

Whether backending contracts is a good thing or not is debatable, but it is a valid method of managing salary cap pressures.

The cap is 11,950,000 in 2026 and 97.5% (11,651,250) of that needs to be spent, hopefully the club can target some highly talented younger forwards as the journeyman approach strategy has been hit and miss.

Combination wise if they can land some talented edge forwards they can grow their games with Walsh and Large, would have liked the club to have shown interest in Ethan Robert’s but the Tigers got him.

Bishop Neale played extremely well for the Warriors in Harold Matt’s, if the club can’t get 19-22 year old players they may have to target the 17-19 year olds, there are a few of them.

You have to be prepared to spend an awful lot of money if your strategy is signing the top kids and bringing them through your junior sides.
As we have seen at Manly, they can be long gone before they become first graders and all that money was for...? eg Fainus
A club such as Roosters can afford to buy highly touted kids in bulk, if some never make it they don't even mind, because money is almost a bottomless pit for them.

The Rorters are the pinnacle for sure with the academy and how they get the best talent.

Though the Raiders have done a job in getting the next available best to their club and developing them and getting good reward for that this season.

There is some pain in going with a strategy of getting younger players in terms of instant results and money spent, hopefully the club can get some much needed depth in the forwards with the cap space that is available and be competitive next season.

You might be right about the Bulldogs squeezing Manly.

Gould screwing us over again.

He did it when he convinced Bozo Fulton that Trent Barrett was going to be the next Supercoach (which I still think Gould did as a way to get Barrett out of Penrith without Gus having to fire his mate. That it screwed Manly over was just the bonus).

I still point to the timeline of a decade or so ago.

Penrith won the U/20's GF in 2013. Barrett was then moved from First Grade assistant to U/20's head coach ... and they promptly missed the 2014 Finals. Barrett was then removed as 20's coach and put as Cleary's assistant during Ivan's first stint there.

Assistant coach, a position where he had no real decision making powers.

Oh and by the bye, once Barrett was removed as coach, Penrith's U/20's were back up top again, beating the injury free Turbo (oh for those days.....) led Manly in the 2015 GF and losing the 2016 GF to the Chooks

6 months into 2015, Penrith are lumbered with a coach who really can't coach, at least not very well, even if he is only the assistant. And remember, at the end of 2015 Ivan Cleary also jumped ship to the Tigers so Barrett would have at least been a contender to take over had he stayed.

Next thing, Gus sells Bozo on Barrett's wonders as a future coach and that's it, he's suddenly Manly's coach for the next 3 years (funny how we all seem to forget, we actually made the Finals in 2017 under Barrett.....).

I still maintain Gus sold Barrett to Bozo in order to get Barrett out of Penrith. That it screwed Manly over was just the bonus for Gould.

What you say makes absolutely no sense.
Why did Gould then hire Barrett as head coach of the Bulldogs?

Barrett became Dogs coach before the 2021 season. They'd actually announced it in July of 2020. Gus didn't go back to Belmore until re-hired in July 2021.

When Barrett was hired as the Dogs coach, Gould was working a consultancy role with the Warriors.

It was less than a year after Gould started working as the Bulldogs GM that Barrett "resigned" as their coach.

Gould didn't hire Barrett as head coach of the Bulldogs. He did effectively fire him though because guaranteed that Outdoor Furniture Boy was told "resign or be sacked".....

Well, I take that back. You are correct.

It must have been the Trent will be the Dogs coach long after I have gone that I thought he hired Twent.

Gould also said Barrett " will be the next supercoach of the NRL, he's that good " in 2017.

But no doubt he would claim now that he always knew Trent was no good. That's just Donald Gould's modus operandi.
