Reported on local Suncoast Channel 7 that Anna (Capt) Blighs Qld Gov has pulled the proposed $8m funding for Stockland Park upgrade.

Wouldn't surprise.  She promised a hospital for Kawana before the election and that has vapourised too.  Now we have to put up with gridlock around Nambour Base.

Kawana is one of the top 5 places in Australia for loan defaults aren't they?

They may be worried people will just hock parts of the stadium for cash

Final nail in stadium's coffin

THE Sunshine Coast Council is only “moderately confident” a scaled back version of the proposed Stockland Park redevelopment will go ahead after the Bligh Government confirmed yesterday that it would not help fund the project.

The government was slammed for giving Coast residents the “run around” after education and training minister Geoff Wilson announced the government would not hand over $8 million in funding for an $18 million joint grandstand with Sunshine Coast TAFE at the Bokarina site.

In a written response to a parliamentary question by LNP member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie, Mr Wilson said any government investment in Stockland Park would “result in ongoing and accumulated losses to Queensland taxpayers”.

Mayor Bob Abbot said the government's decision was “extremely disappointing”.

“Right along it's been a bit of a fiasco for us,” he said.

“We've tried to do the right thing and we kept getting led up garden paths.”

Mr Abbot said council would look at securing funds elsewhere, possibly more money from the Rudd Government, but admitted any redevelopment of the much-maligned ground would now likely be a scaled-back version of earlier plans.

Long before yesterday's announcement, council had refocused its efforts on gaining expressions of interest from local builders for the project after fresh talks with TAFE to build a multi-purpose grandstand at the site appeared to have flatlined.

Council only has $10 million to spend on any redevelopment – $5 million from its own coffers and $5 million from the federal government.

It is expected the $5 million in federal funds will be withdrawn by mid next year if the council cannot reach a deal with a builder which satisfies the Rudd Government.

Stockland Park board chairwoman, councillor Keryn Jones, said yesterday that she was “moderately confident” a deal could be struck with a local builder.

She said council was going through the tender process after receiving a good response from builders through the EOI, and she hoped a winning bidder could be announced early next year.

“We're really keen to make this happen,” Ms Jones said.

In September, sports minister Phil Reeves refused council's request for $5 million in state funding to overhaul the site, but said the original offer of $8 million from TAFE was still on the table.

Mr Bleijie said the Bligh Government had once again let down Coast residents.

“This announcement today highlights the economic mismanagement and priorities of the government,” he said.

Maybe this $5 mill could be redirected to Brookie, after all it is Christmas..........

Ryan and Doug.

Kawana is just a suburb of the Sunshine Coast. They are essentially talking about Stockland Park. Kuwana is about 5 - 10 minutes down the road from Alexandra Headland and Moollooba.

Enough description...not that it matter now that we are going to have to pull the pin on the whole deal with Sunshine Coast

We'll keep it that way.  We don't need southern tossers on the Sunshine Coast, they can go to Surfers Paradise and do whatever it is they do there.

They most likely meet up with Wicksy & Joey and after doing the business go for a surf.

Matas is now a Hippy I believe........

I agree, if they don't know where it is better it stays that way. Its a shame, a stadium there would have likely seen the Sunshine coast get a footy team in the near future. Stockland is a pretty good venue for a decent stadium with pretty good access and plenty of parking space, whilst still being in the thick of things.

The hippys live in their little Maleny communes.  Montville and Mapleton have some class and style thanks to the European influence.  Going French tomorrow night.

Given Nicklin Way is nearly permanent gridlock one wonders how it would cope with a large stadium.  It is incomprehensible that the Sunshine Coast with a population greater than Canberra has a main football ground that wouldn't rate in the top 3 in a 35,000 dungholes like Ornage, Baffurst and Dubhole.

it'd be better than Wade park Mata, its crap, but Bathurst and Dubbo both have very good facilities for country centres

Both Apex Oval and No. 1 Oval in Dubbo have better facilities than Stockland Stadium.  Seriously, some high schools in sydney have better.
