That Elusive FG

First Grader
A Field goal ends the game 5 to go.
The Manly team had a few chances, but took some bad options.
The fact they were getting tackled inside the 3-5 metres from the line allows the defence to take time away from the kicker.
They were never going to penalise them for offside, though they clearly were.
The FG play needs the attack to be just on or outside the 10m line, to maximise distance from defenders and give the kicker more time.
Poor execution and a huge part of the result.

We should've been good enough to hold on anyways, but no. Very disappointing

You make a good point. Its surprising to see teams don't intentionally go for a tackle on the 10 meter line in order to get the best of both worlds in the attempt at field goal.

Ive got to say though I'm not even 50% sure the field goal was foremost on our minds at any point. I was messaging my brother and basically screaming for a one pointer as soon as we scored our last try.

This is one thing I didn't think we would have a problem with after the hodko signing. Cherry needed to step up and slot the shot but Ive got this little voice in the back of my head saying they are still trying to sort out the roles between themselves.

I was surprised to see chez touch the ball just once before he scored the first try and even thought too myself these guys really are taking the organisation vs off the cuff play literally.

Id bank on the lack of field goal being because of confusion in terms of who's directing play, however, we're at a stage where we need to win or we're a year older. Hopefully it gets sorted soon and we can get back to winning because I feel like if we can sort the small issues we have we can go deep into the finals. And we only have 3/4 of a team.

we should watched the replay so we knew what was going to happen then with hindsight that we get screwed 13 points come up with different plays

We have to be one of the worst sides for setting up on field goals. Even the ones we get seem to be more good luck than good management. Been going on for years, I think the last time we looked composed on field goals was when Hodko was here the first time around. It's like we never practice it at the hundreds of hours of training we do in a season.

In contrast, Melbourne had practically no pressure on their kicker:

There are teams who are willing to roll the dice contesting field goals BECAUSE there is definitely wiggle room on how the rules are interpreted. Not saying this excuses our poor form in kicking them but F** me its getting frustrating to watch games when so many are now determined by field goals.

Maxta,
You are my favourite poster on Silvertales forum. Your analysis of the game is among the best I have seen.

Even the “goat” Thurston couldn’t make one from 15m out in front
Nor Morgan (most out of form player in the comp.)
Then you watch Munster, gets a shiit ball from dummy half, leisurely bends down, and knocks it over with, what seemed like all the time in the world.

Surely with the precedent you've set tonight regarding what you consider negative posts from different posters(most would call them constructive critism, but hey, don't let that stand in your way.). Wouldn't Maxtas post fail in your eyes, due to him saying 'Poor execution' near the end of his post! Surely that is unacceptable negativity by your standards.😵😵😵😵

Spot on. Which is exactly why I ask if its time DCE and Manly part ways. He has to continue to develop, and in this area, I'm not seeing it.

Cherry-Evans ain't going nowhere. Uate, and Hastings are going, maybe Brown. but Barrett has a fancy for this guy, and if we are short on cash, he might keep him.

With 5 to go I felt like we needed another try, not a field goal, to win the game.
Raiders are notorious for quick points and it felt like they would get enough opportunities to run us down regardless.

The field goal was the wrong play last night, whether he kicked it or not, imo.
