The Core Four:
Brett Stewart
StevenMatai
Jamie Lyon
Matt Balin

Some clubs are one star players, teams like J.T's cows or Hayne’s Eels. Some are All Star teams like the roosters or old broncos teams who somehow have an embarrassment of test players. And of course the Melbourne's.

Manly in recent times have a Core Four. Great players have come and gone in and around the core four however it is what each of these players bring to the Sea Eagles on and off the field that IS what Manly is all about.
Killer's 190 games for Manly since 2007 have been such a high standard that no other player in the Nrl has been more consistent at such a high level. Best centre in the game and our Captain.
Matt B 195 games and almost all of them consecutive. You never hear a bad word spoken about Ballin on or off the field. He is the glue in our side whether defending or setting up our sets. A very underrated player by armchair footy fans everywhere.
Snake has had more bad luck than most of us get in our lifetimes. Too many injuries and off field crap that he just never deserved but you never see him not putting in on the field. His skill set is second to no other full back.
Skivvy turns games with a single tackle. He plays through pain like no other player in the modern game. He does the work of a forward, never ever gives up and is so committed to his family - he should be the role model to all people starting a family.

These players have been our most consistent for the last seven or eight years. They take the pressure off our halves, make our wingers look like stars and clean up after our forwards. Ballin's 80 mins and 50 tackles allow our 2nd rowers to play more mins, Snakes playmaking covers for the halves if they are "off" and gives them infinite option in attack. Lyon and Matai are simply two of the best centres in league and set the bar high for all those who pull our colours on. Regardless of what wingers we have and what forwards come and go and if DCE and Foz are in or out and if JLJ or in the past Liam Foran fill in we are always in with a chance with our core four. They are our Gold Class players but more than that they are the team, they are what Manly is all about. Exceptional human beings. Exceptional players.

These guys are living, playing Manly Legends.

Only really glad to have Snake. Great in defence, can sniff a try a mile away, and now chiming into the backline to put his winger over.
Matai- too many injuries and misreads in defence
Lyon- weak defence. Im suprised he and Matai dont get penalized more for taking out opposition players that are going for bombs.
Ballin- not an attacking ball-playing hooker that top teams need.

The only hooker I would have over Ballin would be Cameron SMith but as he is such a knob, I will take Ballin anyday. One of the best hookers to ever play for Manly and a class act on and off the field

you must be kidding.......

Matai's pitch to Goz in the Tele today is great too. Going for the heart strings...

Don't want to speak for @manlyfan76 but I'd say his concentrating on our current roster.

No doubt Choc, Gift & Kitey did contribute massively in years gone by.
Theses four have had a higher level of consistency than any of our other players over the last eight years than any others both on and off the field.

If we can keep the 4 players mentioned and the bring in the youngsters over the next few years the future is very bright. there is nothing more lethal that youth and enthusiasm blended with experience and wisdom. I for one dont fear the future of our team, regardless of who stays or goes because the big 4 will pass on their knowledge of what it takes to be successful.

Yet another Troll, Dan this must be a site record for new members in a 24 hour period is it?

no we have had bigger days, 2011 finals series was huge, will be funny if it all falls through for them though

Won't it be grand, when the season kicks off, and all Parra's has to show for their awesome powerpoint preso are Choc and Danny Wicks, minus Hayne. Definitely a squad to fill a new 400M stadium and break the 30 year drought lol

The team that finished 10th last year is hard pressed doing any better after such a lacklustre off-season of recruitment. Even Brett Kenny is writing them off for 2015. No finals for them as far as he is concerned, given the reliance now on an inconsistant Sandow.

That the Parra fans focus is instead on 2016 is further indication of the 'chasing rainbows' culture of the Eels, developed after almost three decades of dire results and no silverware. No different to the legion of Eels fans that sit in the Parra Leagues pumping note after note into the pokies, telling themselves that the next big win is just around the corner...only to leave with that fortnights welfare payments gone and no cash for rent, school or food left.

The last cheap thrill is to head over to the successful neighbors place and hurl abuse, giving themselves a chance to avoid thinking for just a minute about all that is wrong in their own house. But the sugar rush will go soon, Foran signing or not, as the reality again sinks in and yet another mediocre season is on the cards.

Apart from the years immediately after the NE debacle, when was the last time Manly approached a season with anything less than playing finals in their crosshairs?

Great post. Spot on. Cargo cult mentality hits these perenially struggling clubs. They've pretty much pillaged a quarter of their team and the coach from us. It usually doesn't end well.
