Hey guys, wondering what peoples opinion would be on the following:-

A fair few times this past season, I thought we were found wanting primarily due to the do it all, do and die nature of our backs (Wolfman ripping in every hit up, Matai never leaving any questions on the field in tackles etc).

What inevitably would happen, would be that Buhrer would slot into the centres, and one of our centres (who aren't the swiftest - although best ALL round players) in those positions to transition to the wings, and we ended up being carved out wide.

That leads me to my thoughts on our bench this coming next season. Can we afford to carry a utility back on the bench, meaning Buhrer is our backrower predominantly, and could slot into dummy half at a stretch.

I'm thinking a Ben Farrar, and to a lesser degree Liam Foran / Peta Hiku type.

Now I know a few very successful teams like Melbourne have done so in the past with guys like Hinchcliffe and Quinn.

If we did that, would it be a waste of a bench spot?

I'm assuming, we could go:-

14.
15. George Rose
16. Joe Galuvao
17. Jamie Buhrer

Love to hear what people think about this?

With the game as it is I don't think we could afford the luxury of a back utility on the bench. JB is reportedly the 2nd fastest in the club over 50m so in the rare or in our case not so rare case of a back being injured he is the logical choice to slot in.

Farrar will probably start the season on the wing as Wolf might be out for the season start anyway. I think 2V will go with Buhrer in the backrow so I would agree with L Foz on the bench as a hooker/ backline utility provided we have some fast mobile forwars on the bench. We need speed and skill off the bench next year. Chee-Kam should feature heavily in that regard.

haha, Darren still has a crush on Farrar I see. As back up he is fine Daz.

As for Ryan's idea. It has merit but I think we would probably only need a reserve back a couple of times in the season when those injuries pop up. As a result we would probably end up playing most games with 3 reserves. I think that would end up with us being tired in the middle and leaking points.

Ryan, have you considered a "utility forward/back" in Liam Foran. On the bench and giving Ballin regular relief in the 9, but when needed relieves in the backline or halves.

Fact has been establish Jamie Buhrer ain't no centre! (even for a stop-gap measure)
Great to have Astro Boy back again. He covered for Snake during the injury time and towards the latter part, he filled in well at fullback. Although only small, Benny Farrer is all heart.

Astro Boy came back to us because the coaching staff think he is good value and so do I

They also thought David Vaeliki & Shane Nuemman was going to be as well. People make mistakes.

The only problem with your statement is that most of that coaching staff is now at Belmore.

Dane Chisholm (can anyone confirm that we have signed him?) could be the ideal utility back. He can play half, five-eighth, centre and fullback. I'm sure he is fast enough to play winger, although he is quite small.

Its no problem feathered friend. Belmore paid big dollars for them because they were good at what they did .

I would like to see the bench extended to 5 so a specialist back line player can be included. If there are no injuries during the game he may not get used e.g. In the GF qualifier when Matai got his leg injury we could have brought on Whare.

Only what he put on twitter after a Tigers fan ask him was he going to Manly and he said yes.

Too risky

Sure a back gets injured and we have to shift Jamie to centre, but for me that is preferrable to two forwards getting injured and having to shift Farrar to Lock!
