Too much speed?

When it comes to the back 5 , neither rubes or koula offer much in this areas either. Not one consistent metre eater apart from tom. They have a go, but impact in rucking us out of trouble is limited

How good was Matai taking those early runs from dummy half. He was always quick to get there, deceive the markers, gain 10m through sheer acceleration, and get a quick play the ball.

Even if our wingers miss their mark, Koula and Garrick should be rushing in to dummy half for a scoot, and not just take hit ups and get belted from first receiver. With their speed off the mark, these 2 should be very effective from dummy half so long as they deceive the marker defence. This should be drilled into them at training

To be fair, Saab has improved on his yardage carries in the past year.

You’ll notice with Saab out, our early shifts to the right are not effective as we don’t have Saabs pace to burn the opposing winger. It’s a major attacking weapon of ours.

He definitely has improved with his yardage carries. He knew that was a problem area for him and has worked on to be better at.
You can see small subtleties when taking these tough carries he accelerates
into contact with his last 2 strides.
I noticed Turbo doing this 3 years ago and made a huge difference.

I agree. Saab’s yardage carries have improved markedly in the last season and a half. I believe it’s been a real focus of his because prior to that he was getting ragdolled every carry. That rarely happens now and although he still isn’t the best yardage winger around, he’s a lot better.

Forgot all about Donald. From memory we didn’t have a great team back then, so I don’t think he ever really got the chances he should have. Still quick though, you’re right. Moore was a centre. I was just talking wingers.

What does Frogs Eyes have to do to get a mention ... he would have burned Saab, Wolfman, Donald and all the others over the first 15m - 20m.

Yeah matai had that little skip to hold up the defence and then would accelerate. Wasnt great as a clean break move but for clawing 10 -12 m of hard territory he was the best. Consistent .what a dude. Just grew and grew as a player

Is this what you mean by 'metre eater'?

Agreed, but I was just talking wingers. Gartner was one of my favourites too - the sight of him sprinting away to score in I think it was the 78 GF replay still gives me tingles.

You can never have too much speed out wide.
You can never have too much speed any where on the field feathered friend
Some players have explosive Speed off the mark
Some players have Long Range Missile Speed

Some players have Plain Pedestrian Speed
And it is so Painstaking to watch them go through the motions and stopped dead in their tracks
These Anticlimax Slow mobile Players
Slow down the momentum of play

Great Memories feathered friend
Once those Google Eyes spotted a Gap
He exploded through untouched for a Manly Try
His Acceleration was Exhilarating Indeed
