    The Life Of Brian (Kelly)

We're too quick to assume Kelly is slow and small. Given him another off season or two and he will be much quicker and stronger as he grows into his body.

    3 turnarounds to recruit

I always love it when Manly buys a high-potential player who flops at other clubs, for a bargain price, and turns around their career. Three I would consider (provided their wage is not much more than minimum salary and they are on one-year deals) are: - Pauli Pauli - Jamal Idris - T Rex...

    Wingers

Everyone talks about Manly needing to recruit a marquee prop or backrower. I'd invest some salary cap on gun wingers. Jorge may or may not be here. Uate will final year of contract. Wright / Kelly look a touch slow, and no stand-out wing back-ups in reserve grade/ 20s ready for NRL next year...

    Jorge

Would love to see him get the utility bench role next year. Covers backline and edge back-rower. Gets rid of Brown. Imagine Jorge with a licence to run for final 15 of each half. Jake could fill in at hooker for 10 mins if Api needs a rest - similar to Maguire at Broncos. Jake has the...

    Stability 2018

For the first time in three years, we have a stable roster heading into next season. Only Lawrence will be missing from next year's team (based on yesterday's side). Am assuming Parker re-signs. I see us signing a depth prop, speedy winger (preferably who kicks goals) and depth second rower...

    Future NRL players

A few commentators have said we might not recruit heavily because have enough good players coming through the ranks. I'm not so sure we do, or at least in time for 2018. Who are the top 10 potential Manly first-graders from lower grades? For mine: 1. Hastings 2. Parker 3. Bainbridge? 4...

    first contact

I saw the game live in Melbourne on weekend. Ouch. Was staggered at our poor first contact. So many offloads, so many Storm players bouncing off tackles on first attempt. Munster looked like a human pinball at times. We've stopped tackling as a unit. Might be fatigue. Might be poor reffing...

    When Brown, Sironen return...

Sironen to starting pack. Brown to bench as utility. Lane to bench (plenty of game time, please). Lussick 18th man. Bench: - Brown - AFB - Perrett - Lane Big bench. Good injury cover. Great impact. And more game time for Marty / AFB with two rather than three props on bench. Thoughts?

    size

Has Manly ever field a bigger forward pack / bench than the one against Panthers tomorrow? 3 x 115 kg or so on bench 4 x 110 kg or higher in starting pack Hope Lussick has mobility to play lock for high minutes.

    Injuries - Siro

Has to be Brown. He best position is second row, and elevating him brings Hastings to the bench. I'm not a Brown fan either, but that's the safest option to plug a hole for 8 weeks. He's also capable for playing 80 minutes, which helps bench rotation. Also, it causes least disruption... moving...

    Goings

My tip on who we will lose for next season: Myles (obviously) Lawrence (great player, but too many young props coming through) Winterstein (hopefully to make way for Jorge into pack, Parker on wing. Happy if we keep Frank) Blake Green (big call, but Hastings will overtake Green by then, and Tom...

    Manly Attack 2016 To 2017

Good post. Size is a key factor for mine. We are much bigger across the board.

    Manu Vatuvei

Playing reggies for Warriors. Possible replacement for Jorge? Same attributes: size, strength, inconsistency ! Would love see the beast in a top team (ie us) by June 30. Even better if Warriors carry half the salary.

still a few chinks to fix

Am super-impressed with the team's development this year. Could be top four if we fix the following: 1. Slow third quarters Partly due to referees even up scoring with lopsided penalty counts. But we start second halves too slowly and make dumb errors. Can't let the likes of Brisbane/Raiders...

    Wright for Kelly?

No saying it will or should happen, but Wright's goal kicking, experience and ability to slot in at fullback if Tom Turbo is injured mid-game could be valuable in the back half of season. Can't see us progressing deep into September without a decent goal kicker. Personally, would stick with...

    Conditioning... credit where it's due

There was flak last year about our supposed lack of conditioning. Well, we look bigger, fitter and faster to a man this year. I can't recall the last time Manly's NRL squad was injury free in round six. Or being able to name a team and not have several positional changes one hour before...

Do we need a utility on the bench?

I'm not sure Manly needs a utility. That's not a criticism of Brown, but an observation that we have more to gain from four big forwards. With Sironen, we have cover for halves if one is injured mid-game. Winterstein gives us emergency cover in the centres, at a pinch. If Api is injured or...

    Yet another player cull needed

It would be nice to have a pre-season with little player turnover so we can build on combinations and develop the squad. But that's not possible with our roster. Players who should go at season's end: 1. Matai and Stewart (obviously) 2. Myles 3. Brown 4. Tafua (true warrior, but looks like a...

    Lawrence

Can't see BJ making the starting 17 this year (even though he looks in great shape). Bozo wants more size in the pack and AFB/ Perrett/Meehan fit the bill. I'd like Trent to use BJ more creatively - perhaps as an edge/middle type forward (not just middle). He has the pace for it and seemed to...

    Final Prop spot

Realistically, looks like we will have to go for a cheaper, established prop: - Jeff Lima - Matthew White (Gold Coast connection with Cartwright) - Sione Louisi (my pick) - Eddie Pettibourne - Martin Kennedy
