Smith joins Roosters exodus as Souths pay big transfer fee to get star mid-season
The Sydney Roosters are reportedly set to release hooker Brandon Smith to arch rivals the South Sydney Rabbitohs effective immediately.

Hot on the heels of bombshell news that gun winger Dominic Young was free to leave, and with Terrell May’s off-season axing fresh in mind amid his hot form at Wests Tigers, CODE Sports reported the Roosters and Souths have been in negotiations for a release over the past 48 hours. A deal is expected to be reached by the end of the week.

Under the terms of the agreement, Souths will have to pay $180,000 in the form of a transfer fee to secure Smith for the rest of the 2025 season.

Brandon Smith's turbulent career at the Sydney Roosters is officially over after the NRL club released him from his contract on Tuesday.

His official release came a day after Chooks coach Trent Robinson said it would happen as long as Smith passed a medical with South Sydney on Monday.

The Kiwi utility forward will move down the beaches to join the Rabbitohs immediately.

Just to add the announcement in this announcement thread:

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles are delighted to announce the signing of experienced halfback, Jamal Fogarty, on a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old Queenslander will move from Canberra to Manly at the end of the 2025 season.

Now in his fourth season in the nation’s capital, Fogarty has been impressive through the first 10 rounds, with good numbers to back up that form.

He sits third in try-assists and has made more attacking kicks, and kicked more goals, than any other player.

Fogarty played six seasons in the Queensland Cup, winning two premierships with former Gold Coast Titans feeder club, the Burleigh Bears.

He made his NRL debut with the Titans as a 23-year-old in 2017, before a return to Burleigh, where he guided the club to its most recent premiership in 2019.

Seems a bit of a gamble to me. Big difference between coaching Australia a few times a year and putting a brand new team together from scratch. Especially when they need to be successful from day one.
