Just wondering if I'm the only one feeling a bit disconnected with Manly at the moment. A bit like they're not, well, very Manly.

I know there'll be a whole bunch of 'here we go again' critics but my biggest feeling after the loss on the weekend was that I wished it was Tooves in that press conference and not Trent 'it just wasn't our day' Barrett.

After the Penns effectively obliterated the football club, our identity, to me, has become more and more tenuous.

As happens with all clubs, the senior players who had been so passionately Manly gradually retired. Then we lost our passionate, 'maroon and white in his veins' coach Tooves.

DCE is our captain but we all know he's here because of a bidding war. And yes, I know ... modern game, yada yada yada.

Then last year Bozo leaves the club.

Today I had the ghastly thought that the only real Manly stalwart is Peter Peters. Ick.

I think Tom and Jake are our big and only hope for the Manly identity.

I know an identity can be really hard to define, but every club supporter knows what it is for that club.

Of the teams flying high at the moment:
The Dragons have Mary as coach.
The Tigers have the return of Benji.
The Warriors are full of New Zealanders.

Maybe it's just a few years of bog ordinary, but I'm just not feeling it.

Anybody?

I would have prefered a manly coach. And without the t brothers we would be wooden spooners this year and last year. I believe we paid overs for dce. 1 mill is enough not more and more as cap increases.
None of us know for sure how much DCE is being paid under the salary cap. Don’t forget he has some big TPA deals or did have until Dogberg threw the book at us.

Yes, I feel your consternation about the changing Manly Culture :tmi:

But, I don't share your anxiety as we have been through many eras at Manly

Baz was fined 20k last year for speaking from the heart. So we'll never hear anything but 'Yeah, Nah' in interviews now.
Don't read that as his lack of passion, but just good sense in dumbing it down for the Journos :nerd:

The Chez + Turbo Clan is the core of the Manly Culture of this era.
Measured, polite and professional athletes.
It's a good change from the off field issues of our past Manly heroes 🙂
Bland= reliable but onfield this trio is just as exciting to watch

I am hoping that the endless roster change is slowing now that all investigations are over

Love to see Kels, Siro, Croker and Jetski evolve, along with some unknown forwards

It's an interesting rebuilding phase, just part of the cycle of Manly eras @:)

I with you there. I'm so used to seeing our great teams grinding out wins. Locked in an arm wrestles but persevering with toughness and grit. I'm starting to tire of the excuses "it wasn't our day" bull crap. That's just way too soft for me. Sure luck plays a role but you create your own luck by getting all the 1 percenters in order. The tigers are testament to that. TBaz has to be accountable for the tactics, discipline, morale and the team that he fields. He has to act more manly and stop being a soft cock.

I hope not @Budgewoi Eagle you sound like a really nice girl!!

As to the rest, it’s the ups and downs of life as a Manly fan!

Not so much the Barrett part, think he has done a good job apart from a handful of selection errors in Brown, Walker(5/8) and now Croker that turn into mistakes due to the error not being fixed earlier.
While there are the Turbo Bros and a heap of hopeful youngsters in the wings, still feel the Manly legacy is on hand, but I will confess that the days with Manly legends like Arko, Bozo and Tooves was perhaps a more symbolic Manly era....
Personally still get pumped every week awaiting the Manly games as I have over 40 years now....there have been certain teams with players that definately had my anticipation levels higher, but there is still a sprinkling of those type players in 2018.
Can certainly understand the thread and I think due to all the negative press there has been an almost uncertainty feel to Manly in recent times also, but as a long term supporter have seen all sorts of media crap over the years and hoping this crop of players use it like historical Manly teams of the past, not just the win on the scoreboard but use this hate to bond as 1 and compete at 100% when the chips are down.....this will win back the fans who may feel a little lost today....

A part of my Manly soul left when Toovey was shafted. I cared much less when we lost when Toovey was coach, such is my love for him...our identity was still firmly in tact. Seeing that legend behind the microphone at the press conference, knowing that we were Manly and that everyone hated us and we'd bounce back, was enough to console me after a loss. Toovey was great at pin pointing what went wrong and articulating it during a conference. I always felt a sense of closure and a "move onto next week" attitude.

Not anymore.

We are one of the youngest teams in the comp, trust me, in 7 years time when we have two premierships behind us and Turbo, Jurbo, DCE have all played 250+ games for Manly nobody will be complaining that we don't feel "Manly"

I’m probably the opposite because I always see the players around in their gear, they always have a smile on their faces and are always stopping to have a chat to people. Reminds me of the glory days of the last era when I’d see Choc at the Salty Rooster with his shirt off all the time @:D

Personally .......
Toovey might be gone and the Incomparable Immortal might be gone but the Manly spirit is still there and will always be there .
We are going through some challenging times and if Trent does not get us through it then someone else will .
One thing about the proud history of our great club is that we always rise like the mighty Sea eagles that we are .

I am 100% with you @Budgewoi Eagle

I am totally disconnected to the point that I really don't care if we win or lose. Although I do get excited with a win like the Parra game.

I have been in Sydney (I live 500km away) twice this year and haven't for one moment thought about going to the matches. Choosing instead to watch them on my phone/ipad.

I will be in Sydney for the Roosters match in May and might go to that as it is in the city but the weather will have to be perfect and all the moons aligned.

I love league and watch almost every match each weekend and that is what keeps me interested. Plus this forum always keeps me involved.

I feel the current side is Northern Eagles Mark II.

Penn is Greenburg in a maroon and white tie, i dont like him at all or what he stands for. Sometimes I think we would be better off dead than in our current state.

As for the players none will ever be held in the esteem of my favourites Randall, Eadie, Krilich, Fulton Lyon, Menzies, Stewarts, Thompson, Toovey etc. Honestly I dont really like many of them other than the Turbos, yeah DCE is not my cup of tea but he is a top player indeed.

Sorry but this is how I feel. If I didnt have maroon and white blood I wouldnt bother.

What I seen on the weekend. I'm not sure we pay DCE enough.

I don't know if anyone will ever be as good as Cliffy in my eyes.

But DCE is the only person in generation next, with the ability to remotely one day come close.

What people forget is he is one bloke, and he can only do so much. He is already doing the work of about 3 men in our team. I honestly think after 5 games, DCE should be on top of the Daly M's etc.

The coach clearly knew he needed a Carney, Hodgkinson.

But Baz continuing to refuse Hastings a run at 6 jumper is becoming close to insanity.

I will always miss Toovs.
