Def 1996 - an old Match report

16 Jun 1996: Manly coast to victory
Manly moved to equal first place in the Optus Cup on Friday night, hardly getting out of second gear as they easily accounted for a depleted Brisbane 18-4 at ANZ Stadium. After a quick try to Brisbane in the opening minutes, superb and at times inspired defence from the Sea Eagles prevented the home team from scoring again. Manly's three tries all came from kicks - the first two both brilliant efforts from Danny Moore, who in both cases put up the kick and also scored the try.
The second half was scoreless and somewhat lacklustre, apart from a bizarre incident where Matthew Ridge somehow kicked the ball out of the hands of Brisbane centre Darren Smith, who was diving over the line for a certain try. Moore, Ridge, Mark Carroll and Des Hasler all played particularly strongly. A tough game comes up for the Sea Eagles on Friday night, when they face up to arch-rivals North Sydney at Brookvale.

Nathan Merritt charged for sliding feet first into an attacker, attempting to stop a try. His first offence and he is looking at suspension.
That F**king grub Slater has done it at least twice that I can recall, and got warned once for it.

Has a familiar ring, doesn't it?  Serial offenders for Super League clubs go with zero or small penalties, but find a cleanskin from an ARL club and BAM tough penalties. Thems the rules of the game. So it seems.

That Super League lawyer Gallop could come up with a different spin on this, no doubt, but with News Ltd and associates dominating the media, he knows he has no need for an answer to any tough questions. Remember when the media was independent?

Fairfax would have you believe it still is.  But noone takes much notice of them, filled with Manly hating patsies like Gould and Masters.
