Areas to improve REFs

They need improvement in every area & have all season long.
What areas p**s you off most & how can it be improved.
*Diving for penalties = If the player is down it must be deemed legitimate, whether its a penalty or not that played MUST leave the field for 10 minutes due to player welfare, would stop the crap of review, penalty, player winks then jumps up...hate it.
*Off Mark Play The Ball = JWH & Inglis are specialists leaving the marker off side & gaining ridiculous momentum = immediate penalty.
*Foward passes that lead directly to a try = If video refs can take away a try due to a play the ball infringement, obstruction, contesting a bomb ect , foward passes MUST be ruled on.....how do they not get this??

BTW - blowing them up is not an option.....😛

While Video Refs can't rule on a forward pass but they can rule on an 'accidental offside' so why no one looks at that is beyond me.

Tries from kicks no doubt a great skill is involved but due to the amount of them lessen the value on them or take the conversion away from them.

Repeated infringements use the sin bin - watch the ESL ref's use the sin bin.

All players treated with the same respect ie watch how a referee treats say JT compared to Thomas Leuluai its light years away the difference between the two there treating the pay packet not the man. Seen many times where some player would get mouthy with a ref (JT is a prime example) nothing happens a lesser light gets marched 10m or sent to the bin.

I like your thinking on the lessor points to take emphasis off that cross field bomb. Was thinking that kicks in the 20 metre zone resulting in tries maybe reduce to 3 points??
Yellow card - why not, maybe stop the rot by embarrassment. Something needs to be done- its not the spirit rugby league was built on & makes a joke of the hard, tough game we grew up on.

They need to work on consistency. How the hell do the chooks go from conceding 12 penalties in the first final to just 2 in the grand final and Cummings refereed both games.

I hate the diving and a pet hate is players walking off the mark, the refs should penalise rather than tell them to go back and play it.

Funny I read today that Smith (the administrator) talked about the fitness of refs rather than the integrity. And why linesman can't call forward passes is beyond me. Refereeing is the major blot on the game and the administrators should look hard at why that is. It's not fitness, or knowing the rules, it's their integrity.

how about they ref the same way ALL YEAR, not changing their style for finals football, if they want all games to be refereed the way it was done during the finals series than do that from round 1.

The refs, touchies and video refs need to work together and rules that prevent changing obviously incorrect decisions need to be scrapped.

Why the hell isn't the minimisation of errors the ONLY priority ? There were mistakes in the GF that could have been reversed (the Jennings touch and the forward pass) and they weren't. Instead we let poor decisions stand.

Every team in the competition tries to minimise errors. The refs on the other hand.....don't seem to care.

The video refs need to tip more to the guys in the middle. They have the benefit of replays. Open your mouths you nuffies.

We'll said Simon. If the man upstairs who can plainly see what happened is too scared to change a decision (and I have seen a few that have been done this year), then a Captain's Call like NFL is the only solution. I don't care about delays, I care about the right decision!

The refs need to revert to keeping some professional distance from the players.

Calling some players by first names, or even nicknames, should be abandoned pronto. It undermines the refs' authority, it is conducive to petulant haranguing by players, and, importantly, it is a familiarity that can never be spread equally to every player. It makes it personal each time there is a decision.

DSM5 and Rex and others have referred to the phenomenon of unconscious bias. I agree this really is an area that needs to be looked at.

I can't ever see a time when the video ref will rule on forward passes, not with the current technology anyway. They tried it way back and it was a failure and that's the reason they pulled the pin on it. It all looks very simple when the pass is 5m forward, but what about when it's 5cm forward ?? If you are going to rule on one you've got to rule on all. It's just one of those rules you've got to take the good with the bad.

Diving is more problematic, we need to stamp it out, but how you do it without risking the health of genuinely injured palyers is the difficult question.

As for playing the ball off the mark...the rule exists, they just choose not to enforce it.

One of my pet hates and I have said so on here many times. IMO there is nothing in the game that has changed for the better than the play the ball where tackled rule. It must be enforced - no excuses. I almost feel like a zealot but in 99% of cases Manly has adhered to the rule and any team playing us who doesn't gets an unfair advantage. Cudos to our staff and players for sticking with doing the right thing. I can even accept refs calling players back to where they should have played it, but if they had any balls it would be a penalty or the bin.

The problem is that depending on whether your team is attacking or defending will determine how blatant you think the forward pass is. I can only assume that they took this power away from the video ref for a good reason, i.e. it wasn't working. Granted that they didn't give it a go for very long, but that would suggest that the process was quickly identified as one that was going to be problematic.

Get rid of the video ref, get rid of the second ref.
One ref, two touchies. The ref makes the decision on the field, if he stuffs up he gets dropped to reserves with a consequent drop in pay.
Refs who perform consistently in the lower grades get promoted.
Less subjective rulings based on individual referees interpretations of the rules. I'm sick of hearing commentators saying common sense must prevail in applying the rules, when has that ever happened? Common sense seems to be in short supply in the refereeing ranks at the moment. A more objective approach would be the way to go imo.
The referees need to be reminded that they are not the main attraction. Fans need to be secure in the knowledge that the best team won in a fair contest not that their team was dudded by a prima donna ref.
