NATHAN Walker will have to wait in his bid to become the first Australian to play in the NHL after being cut from the Washington Capitals’ roster for the coming season.

Walker had been part of the Capitals’ pre-season training camp but was one of 17 players cut on Friday, according to the Washington Post.

It’s far from the end of the road for 21-year-old Walker, who had done well to get back on the ice so quickly after suffering a torn ACL in January.

He has two years remaining on his entry-level contract with Washington and is likely to be sent to training camp for development club the Hershey Bears, the minor league club where he spent most of last season.

Walker, born in Wales and raised in Sydney, last year became the first Australian picked in the NHL Draft when selected at 89th overall.

AHHH

Walker breaks his hand on the verge of a call up!

“Nathan Walker was a name that we’re thinking about bringing up and he got hurt this weekend,” Head Coach Barry Trotz said following the Caps’ promotions of Chandler Stephenson and Christian Djoos after the All-Star Break. “So [Nathan] will be eliminated for a little bit.”

“He’s going to be a really great story when he plays in the National Hockey League,” Trotz said Monday after practice. “He’ll be the first Australian player who was born in Australia and really started training in Australia. And how he’s done it… I mean, he’ll be an inspiration to a lot of people.”

(though he was born in *cough* Cardiff.)

AUSTRALIAN sporting history will be made on Sunday morning (AEDT) when Nathan Walker becomes the nation’s first NHL player.
He's getting plenty of publicity now.
Showing his goal a lot on the news.
Fair few Aussie's in the crowd too. Good to see.
His dad played league and so did he till age 15 in the cronulla district.
He wanted to play in the NRL but I think his bank balance will be better off where he is.
Good luck to him.

Fake news...
He is the first Australian born not Australian citizen to be in the NHL

Ha so the second

We even have had an Aussie Stanley cup winner...

Forgot to update, after 2 games walker got put back on waivers by Edmonton and Washington exercised its right of first refusal and claimed Walker back again.

And he just got his first point (assist) in the playoffs!!!
