@BOZO it seems you need to educate the current crop of players about the standing your idol has in the game of rugby league.......

PLAYER POLL: NAME THE IMMORTALS

They hold the most vaunted place in our game but do our current crop of NRL stars know who all eight of our Immortals are? And who is their pick to be the ninth?

Anthony Don (Titans)

Joey Johns, Wally Lewis, Clive... The small little fullback for Souths, Clive Churchill! Is Norm Provan one? Summons? Beetson. Langlands. Gasnier. That's all I've got. The next immortal should be either Cameron Smith or Johnathan Thurston for mine.

Nathaniel Roache (Warriors)

I actually have no idea… Wally Lewis and Andrew Johns. There's two, but that's it. For the next one selected I'd probably go Johnathan Thurston. Based on what I have watched he would definitely deserve it. Also Darren Lockyer.

Darius Boyd (Broncos)

Wally, Mal, Joey, Langlands. Raper? Churchill. Dally Messenger? Is Arthur one? I wasn't sure. Do you have to be retired for a certain number of years to be considered? I'd have to say 'Locky' (Darren Lockyer) should be next. JT and Smithy will be after that but for what Locky did, how many records he holds, games he's played, changing positions, winning comps and everything I'd have to say Locky.

Luke Brooks (Wests Tigers)

Joey, John Raper... I haven't got a clue! Is Wally Lewis one? Clive Churchill and Arthur Beetson. That's all I've got.

Kane Elgey (Titans)

I'm no chance. Did Andrew Johns just get named one? Wally Lewis. Darren Lockyer? I've got no idea. Darren Lockyer's my favourite player so I thought he would be one so he's my pick to be next. And obviously Thurston when he retires.

Ben Matulino (Warriors)

Joey Johns. Mal Meninga? Brad Fittler? Wally Lewis! That's all I've got. The next one they pick should be Simon Mannering.

Matt Eisenhuth (Wests Tigers)

Joey, Wally, Churchill... that's all I've got!

Rugby league's eight Immortals to date are Clive Churchill, Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands, Johnny Raper, Arthur Beetson, Wally Lewis and Andrew Johns.

Well if David Smith didn't know current players, i have no problem with players not knowing players from the 60's who played before their parents were born.

The whole immortal concept is so watered down nowadays that it has become irrelevant.
The very fact that Mal Meninga is being considered for immortal status makes a mockery of the whole thing, great player, a Hall of Fame player for sure, but not an immortal, same for Beetson and Lewis, Wally certainly dominated Origin, but couldn't bring that form into the weekly grind of the ARL competition.

Yes - they are just giving them away now!

when Johns got his I wiped it of my things to remember,he is not in the same category as one B.Fulton

The NRL will have to be careful with this Immortal thing because I hear lots of chatter discussing adding more players and even naming them whilst they are still playing etc. the whole idea is for the concept to be prestigious...if we only have 8 in 100 years, then we should only be adding 1 every 10-15 years or so. If these idiots add Smith, Slater, Cronk, Inglis, Thurston and Lockyer together in the next year or two, the whole concept is ****ed.

I reckon Thurston is the only one I would consider fit for that list anyway. Smith is good but overrated media darling, Cronk is no better than Ricky Stuart or Alan Langer, Inglis is a hot and cold bully, and Slater is on par with Brett Stewart. Lockyer was lucky to play with a team that were millions over the cap every year and he went missing in games for long periods of time.

The Immortal has stamped his name in the history books for ever and it is irrelevant that some players self proclaim they have no idea
