Bunker - 1 Ref or 2 refs

This system ATM is crap
Been thinking a system...
1 ref to add consistency both ways and decisions made LIVE with touchies input....sure will get a few wrong , but they do now - after taking 23 minutes to make a decision killing the games momentum.
Here is how the technology of the bunker can work ....they have live vision 100% based on the ruck area....if a ball is not touched by the foot, played sideways or the defence holds on they make an immediate call to the ref who call penalty/scrum - but this ruck area is in the hands of the bunker to allow refs/ touchies to hold a solid 10m ect and take the pressure off and this bunker can simply rule the ruck ??

There is nothing wrong with the concept. The problem is the competence of those in the role. The League need a big rethink about how these guys are trained and ensure that the majority of them dont have cataracts and macular degeneration, because I'm certain many of them cant see much beyond their nose. I mean how hard is it to get it right, when on field refs often get it right more often, and we the TV audience can see what they see and sit back amazed at how mistaken they can be so often.

The system is broken!! Referees need to be allowed to referee a game in peace, they are coached to outsource every big decision now and the opinion is just another guess some of the time. The bunker has to be able to rule on strips, knock-ons, forward passes and offsides. It is a farce that this does not happen. ALso where the hell was the bunker last night when the Parramatta hooker comes in late to stop the Cowboys player Hess score, eight point try all the way even Sterling called that one and they missed the punch by the Whinger player in the following melee. The system really is busted!!!

1 ref. In goal judges for grounding. No video bullsht. If they miss a couple then whatever. I hate this microsecond scrutiny on every Bunker replay. If it looks like a grounding then award it.

The NRL, the teams, the coaches, the media and the fans have issues with the refereeing of this game.
Why can't the match be refereed by the Bunker?
One camera monitoring the 10 metres.
One camera monitoring the ruck.
One camera monitoring forward passes.
Leave one ref on the field .

Sure, penalties will come thick and fast but how else will a coach/player learn?

And they need to focus on the play the ball. Make them put the foot to ball.
And they need to have the 6 players of each team stay in the scrum. The player who feeds the scrum is the player who will pick the ball up and no-one breaks from the scrum until he has passed the ball.

Have a screen set up at either end of the field. The on field ref who charged with making the live call then has to make the video call. 1 person who saw what he saw verifying with himself whether he's correct or not.

One person resonsible.

How many times do you see players go up to the ref after a bunker decision and the ref on field says "I dont know mate, thats how they saw it".

This is pretty much the call Mave...the ONLY job I feel bunker should control is the ruck as in playing the ball correct, holding on too long....just to take a bit of pressure of the ref who concentrates on keeping the 10m and LIVE decisions that are made instantly with the touchies help.
Your idea of no bunker, is also more appealing than how it is today ....

One non partisan ex player and one respected fan to adjudicate....

The ref to oversee in the background only to make sure the rules are being followed....not to interpret what is on screen as they have proven incompetent to do so!

1. Get rid of the Bunker and Review System. Speed up the game, no time for endless slow motion replays. The Holden Cup game last week was a pleasure to watch and I didn't have time to question any of the ref's calls.

2. Go back to one referee + active touch judges
OR
if you keep two referees - have clearly defined roles within the game with NO swapping over. That way there can be no over ruling each other as each referee just sticks to the area they are adjudicating. Also, there are no changes in interpretation or rule enforcement throughout the game.

3. No player other than ONE nominated captain can interact with the referees. If any non-captain player talks at the referee it is an automatic penalty. No discretion here in terms of what is being said(ie. penalties against some players some weeks for talking back and nothing at other times). Additionally, referees are to stop referring to players by their names and are to cease providing instruction or coaching players to prevent penalties.

4. Get rid of the tip sheet and (referee) coaching differently in preparation for different teams. Simply enforce the rules as you see them.Whatever the current coaching method is, it isn’t working. Ref the game as they see it rather than looking for specific things and having too much on their mind.

5. Change the way we look at the ruck. Either:
a) Keep a team moving back further to be onside as they wrestle to allow the offensive team more space and impact line speed
OR
b) Introduce ruck penalties as restarts to the tackle count or tap kicks only.

6. Focus on the basics: the ruck, offsides, forward passes, knock ons. The rules that rugby league is built on and have been the basis of the game for over a century. They must get the little things right in order to tidy up the game.

7. Reintroduce the 5 minute sin bin for repeated offences.

There's probably a bunch of other stuff.

To elaborate on one of your good points: The touch judges must become more active and involved in the game. I had an earlier 'thought bubble' that equipped them with a laser beam in their flags that was visible to players and fans and clearly showed the 10-metre lines.
Also, I've never liked the refs calling players by their names/nicknames. Just call them by their numbers as rugby refs do.

1 ref for general play 1 in each in goal to rule on any play in goal like grounding or if the ball goes dead, no bunker and as said above active touch judges for 10 meters and foul play. Who doesn't love a touchie running on to the field flag in the air to report on something that happened in back play
