Coincidence ?

Q) Can we trace our "drop off" in both the teams form and specifically Kapow's form to the first game that we went with 3 props on the bench.

Q) Is each prop not getting enough minutes to "get into the game"?

Is it a coincidence that some of our best performances were with 2 props, and Hastings and Brown getting very little or no game time? Is it a case of the fewer interchanges the better?

I think opposition teams are on the "Stop Kapow" in that middle third and Manly will struggle to build momentum.
Have noticed what your saying 100%, but the thing is - these other teams are using extra line speed and often getting the jump, when big Marty is about to carry the footy....Lawrence back will help a heap this week imo.

There is no doubt that Marty has had a dip in form as has the team. I think that Marty is carrying some niggling injuries. For me the biggest thing to stand out is our completion rates over the last four games, they have been well down, we have been great with ball control most of the season and the last month it has dropped off and we need to get that back ASAP.

I guess the extension to the question is, many where calling for Baz to have a bigger bench ... "we will get smashed with Brown and Hastings On the bench"

But we weren't, and when we finally got the big bobbers on the bench .... the outcome hasn't been as predicted by the many ...

Yes when Kapow is just 'OK' we look half the pack - and teams know it. I think he needs to develop a before the line pass so they cant just throw 3 or 4 big bodies at him and slow him down. Or take a support runner with him - we cant just hand him the ball isolated and say " all the best, go beat 4 blokes "

But his worst two games this year have both been against the Dragons....and the scoreboard has reflected it.

He'll be back - too good not to.

I would not be surprised if Marty and possibly A F B were carrying some niggling injuries in recent games . Definitely need some more impact and aggression from A F B and Perrett to support any of Marty "s efforts and ideally against the Storm they all will be able to resume their previous impressive performances .

Personally don't think it is that, but I don't believe in 3 props off the bench anyway, not unless 1 can handle the backrow.Last week we had Kennedy as the 3rd running forward, not a prop and it didn't go so well for us....Think Marty has been down a bit the last few weeks, needs more support from the others,it is hard in the modern game at prop to maintain the rage all season without some off games.

Possession flow is the reason Taupau has been quiet lately compared to early on

Predominantly plays the 1st 20, and if you look at the possession stats in the Warriors, Penrith and Dragons games, inside that period we have only had 25% of the pill so hard to make an impact like he was
Agreed, Manly has not had much of the ball in the first 20 minutes in recent games. And because Manly has not had much of the early ball, when they have had it they have tried too hard to make risky/big plays instead of getting into the grind and working their way up field. They need to cut out the early penalties and dropped balls. Then possession will improve so that Taupau can get the ball and make meters.

They haven't really been able to stop him though, he's been more quiet of late although as has the whole side. When we are on a roll expect him to resume his destructive runs, or in other words, more of his destructive runs

Imagine if he was the support player and got the late second pass after defence were committed to another

Trick shot in close
Need good hard runs from others

Most of the Manly back row have either played for the full 80 or close to it for most this season , so the 3 prop bench arrangement would have seemed feasible with another suitable bench player to be able to cover other positions . Maybe not as practical with Marty or Darcy dropping back to back row and even on a temporary or brief basis .

Agree, my original point was to discuss whether the 5 prop rotation was a successful ploy ... on reflection .. our best results have been with Brown and Hastings on the bench with little or no game time.

Look is as good a theory as any. May or may not play a part but the more the best players are there the better we have to be

I think myles contribution is being missed as well. His defence was top shelf this year and i thought sirro and frank upped the hit ups when he came on

Not stopped, but reduced his impact.
Coaches identify the key opposition players and like a machine, try to take out the vital cog.
Hit Thurston after he passes, up and in defence to shut down that deadly backline ect....
Thing is with Kapow- though they are shooting on him and sending extras into the tackle- he is that powerful is often still winning the collision and driving forward after contact.... the main issue is extra numbers late in slowing his play balls which early season...won us many attacking raids.
Baz will work out counters like the 2nd man option mentioned above, to add a variation.

I think its time for the old brent kite move where he takes the hit up from the kick off to compress the defence and throws to the winger. Really loved that play

Its actually a shame young Sironen is out for an extended period. He may have been so so to start, but by the middle of the season he was becoming an X factor in the forwards and causing havoc out wide. No one has been good enough to replace him. That relieves some pressure for forwards like Kaupau in the middle, because some forwards are covering wider.

I think the bench rotations can be improved. Perrett is great for the future but needs his fitness to improve and i see his build can become more solid (Like taupau's) with some more effort. Plenty of potential although a little slow at the moment, will be watching him closely this week as im not 100% on this but i just feel some more time may be needed

Some interesting (but not significant) numbers on Perrett.

Mins played .. result.
63m .. loss Panthers
38m .. loss Dragons
37m .. loss Storm
35 m .. win Knights
31m .. win Raiders
31m .. win Tigers
15m .. win Warriors.
