AdvertisementNorth Queensland players and officials have taken the "unprecedented step" of publicly denying a Wayne Carey-type sex scandal took place within the NRL club.

Tired of vicious rumours being circulated throughout the rugby league fraternity, the Cowboys last night released a one-page statement that was signed off by all management, staff and players.

Speculation had been rife that in-house friction was responsible for the club's recent woeful form that took North Queensland from league leaders to outside the top eight.

Last weekend's bye saw them climb to equal sixth after the previous week's ugly 16-14 win over lowly South Sydney.

It's believed all players, management and coaching staff were involved in a secret meeting earlier this week to discuss the rumours.

The players emphatically denied the allegations.

The one-page statement released by the club read: "In recent months rumours have been circulating about inappropriate sexual conduct related to a number of the club's players.

"The management, coaching and playing staff unanimously and unequivocally reject and denounce the rumours as malicious, unfounded and untrue.

"We are also pleased to confirm that the players who have been victimised by these rumours have the full confidence and support of the club and their teammates.

"The club does not know who has been responsible for circulating the rumours and would normally ignore rumours of this kind.

"However, as the rumours have become more widespread and attracted speculative media reports, it is time to act.

"Consequently, the club has taken the unprecedented step of issuing this statement. This in no way should be interpreted as the club dignifying the rumours.

"The rumours are offensive and defamatory to all players and their partners. They are also destabilising to the dedicated and hardworking staff at the club, of understandable concern to our loyal and valued sponsors and of grave concern to genuine fans of the Cowboys."

North Queensland chief executive Peter Parr took exception the suggestion his players had not been performing due to internal unrest.

I take exception to people that think that these players representing the North Queensland region have been losing games because they're not happy or united," Parr told the Townsville Bulletin.

"That's far from the truth."

Former AFL star Carey was infamously caught with former teammate and close friend Anthony Stevens' wife Kelli in 2002.

The incident ended Carey's long-time association with the North Melbourne football club.
