Cleary played 15 1st grade premiership games for Manly in 1992-93. The vast bulk of them in 1993 when Matthew Ridge had a long-term injury. Des was then hovering around as a lock (and possibly hooker) back then, as Geoff Toovey had long since taken over as halfback.
Cleary left because he wanted to play 1st grade at fullback.
Deeply ironic that Manly's fortunes are guided by an ex-Penrith junior who who left that cub looking for an opportunity elsewhere, and that that club is about to be guided by an ex-Manly junior who also sought a similar opportunity elsewhere.
