How are metres gained calculated?

Cheers for the answer in regards to tackles wil, still confuses me though how they add things up from there

I thought it would only be handed to 1 player in each tackle, and that was how they come up with the total tackle stats.
 
Nah, if you look at last nights game for example, the Gold Coast made 154 runs combined, whereas the Knights made 299 tackles.

So obviously a number of those tackles were two or three men in the tackle, and of course there would also be the regular one on one tackles.... and
 
So when we see the stats at the end of the game for total tackles, what are we seeing ? I always presumed it was the amount of time we stopped an attack

If we see 300 up at the end of the game for Manly, it doesn't mean we stopped them 300 times, just that 300 times our blokes were involved in stopping them advancing the ball ?
