I was 12 when he won a Premiership for Manly in 1973
I will Remember him and honor him for his Great Manly Premiership Wining contribution A Life time .

Manly is a Great club because of Great Manly Men like Mayes

From my memory (and I may be wrong) but John "Monkey" Mayes (ha ha that hasn't aged too well!) was Kevin Junee's understudy at the Roosters. Manly poached (of course) him and he shone.
Roosters said,
"Hey what, give him back!"
So we then did a swapsies with Junee.
Both were very good players.

Like I said, my recollection but I may be wrong

Won 1973 GF with Manly & followed it up with GF wins with Roosters in 1974 & 75. 3 in a row. Not bad.

Top little player. I recall Manly playing musical half backs with Easts back then. One year Mayes was at Easts and Junee at Manly then Junee at Easts and Mayes at Manly. Both top half backs. Mayes at Easts for several years to 72 then Manly 1973 and back to Easts 74. Junee long term at Easts then at Manly 1974-5 then back at Easts . Mind you we had a better half in Dennis Ward who played in the first premiership win in 1972.

Geez mate, we've had some very good Half Backs since 1947.
Johnny Mayes was a very good player, though I think that there have been a few that may be ahead of him.
