If all the stories about how Croker has been having a huge preseason are true, then he deserves the first crack.
I'd prefer Hastings but I'm keen to see how Croker goes. I wouldn't trust the Raiders to get the best out of a young player much more than I'd trust the Knights to.

Carey was a Lakes United, Newcastle junior. He played for the Graders post-Manly.

Moritz was a Manly junior, who later played for Norths.
Derek Moritz was an Australian rugby league player from the 1970s.
A specialist winger, Derek Moritz was a Manly junior that was graded at Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in 1967. Moritz played for Manly between 1967-1972, and played on the wing in the 1970 Grand Final. He moved to the North Sydney Bears for two seasons between 1973-1974 before retiring. [

Used to watch him play when I was 8 or 9. After he retired he owned the BP station at Wheeler Heights shops, right across the road from out grounds, St Mathews Farm. He had a seriously nice Mustang and used to roll up to watch our A grade home games sometimes.
It went full circle.

It's a long season. I expect they that both Croker and Hastings will have their chances. I hope the competition for the position brings out the best of both of them. I hope DCE stays injury free.
