If one of my employees stole equipment then he/she would get the sack. Letting them work for the remaining time on their contract wouldn't come into it.

Believe it or not, I've heard of people stealing from their employer and getting sacked, only to have the case taken to court for unfair dismissal and the court awarding damages to the plaintiff
