First Grader
For me the equation is simple:

Lehi can put in a rep quality performance at fullback.

Turbo can put in a superstar performance at fullback or centre.

Get them both on the park, I say.

I’d look at giving Talau a go at Lock! Can ball play, good defence, quicker than Jrbo, taller than Jrbo although lighter. He’s taller than Cam Murray & similar weight!
Trbo
Saab
Garrick
Koula
Lehi
Brooks
DCE
Paseka
Simpkin
Taukei’aho
Olakau’atu
Bully
Talau
Res: out of Croker, Aloiai, Sipley, Brown, Jrbo, Navale
Just a suggestion dependant on who else we sign.Mmost likely
Most likely either a bench role for Talau or an opportunity to see how he may go as say a 13 but would contend not on an edge for a range of reasons .
Nothing to lose in the trials for instance giving him a run there .
Likelihood of Bully being on an edge , pretty remote on most recent indications

Turbo is our best 1.
Lehi at 1 and Turbo at right centre, alongside Ola, may well be our strongest team.

Imagine trying to defend the right with Tom and Ola, and Li'l Hoppa probing out the back.
*pardon the Hoppa pun

TT2 is too good for bench role I think.

Definitely too good for the bench on what he showed last season and in normal circumstances but in a crunch situation with Turbo now up to international standard again , Koula right up there with his overall ability ,
Saab adding that certain dynamic and not just based on speed , Garrick, real ability including goalkicking wise . Lehi so hard to leave out with his all round ability .
One of the best Manly debut seasons with Taula in recent times and on all indications a toss up between him and Lehi for a backline position .
Well that is the way it appears right now and agree again , Talau ideally should be in the run on side ,
Not sure if he would personally wish to be tried say as a 13 but looks to have a very competitive outlook so could well be partial to such a move or a go there

Im starting to feel Garrick could be the odd man out. Look his goal kicking is really important obviously but Chez is pretty good if he actually trains for it.

For me a back 5 of:

Turbo
Lehi
Talau
Koula
Saab

looks pretty good.

Yep, but virtually any combination of our 6 outside backs looks good.
If they all start the season fit it will be interesting to see who is left out. Probably makes for an intense and highly competitive preseason. Turbo might be only one of the 6 to be assured of a spot somewhere!
Now just need to get that level of competition going among the forwards too.

Talau definitely has the smallest ceiling of the players fighting for a backline position. He is the slowest and least enterprising of the group; he’s a solid first grader without the flair of the others. For this reason, I’d have him as the depth option.

Maybe, but for mine he was far more consistent than Tolutau Koula this year.

I think he also has the shortest contract

I think he definitely was more consistent but I still believe he has the lowest ceiling. Koula's talent got us over the line against the Dogs in the SF, with a try that Talau could only dream of scoring. I appreciate that it can be contentious to reward players on talent, rather than consistent performance but I'd hate to lose a guy like Koula or god forbid Hoppa, in order to keep Talau.

And you summed it all up when you said it was the superior speed of the speedy Koulas in our back line that broke the Dogs spine and got us over the line in the Dying minutes in the big finals game
Talau has been consistent in his first season and it is good to have consistent back up players making the starting players accountable
I hope Talau continues with his consistency in his second season

I reckon he probably has the highest floor bar Turbo and possibly Lehi though.

Thats important when considering the right mix of players.

Great post feathered friend
and your Key words are "The Right Mix of Players "

Because the Right coach can make a Lethal Premiership Winning Cocktail with The Right Mix of Players .

I agree that it's exciting to think of how good Lehi can be - would hate to lose him.
But when it comes down to Talau v Koula...
floor vs ceiling...
I would probably opt for Talau (assuming he would be way cheaper than Koula).
As said, all about balance & right mix of players.
